Quick answer: Well-known motorcycle insurers in the USA include Progressive, GEICO, Nationwide, Allstate, Dairyland, Foremost, Markel, Liberty Mutual (which absorbed the Safeco brand in 2026) and American Family. Esurance, in our original list, no longer sells new policies. The best insurer for you depends on your state, your bike, your riding record and the discounts you qualify for, so compare quotes from several companies with the same coverage limits.
Two of the original ten entries have changed since this list was written. Allstate stopped selling new policies under the Esurance brand in 2023, and Liberty Mutual retired the Safeco brand in April 2026. We have also removed product features we could not confirm, such as an Allstate “Motorcycle Diary” and Progressive’s Snapshot discount for motorcycles.
What motorcycle insurance covers
Motorcycle insurance pays for damage and injuries after a crash, and can also cover theft, fire, vandalism and weather damage to your bike. Motorcycles offer riders far less protection than cars, so injuries are often more serious and claims can be expensive. Most states require at least liability insurance for motorcycles, but rules and minimum limits vary by state.
Common types of coverage include:
- Liability coverage: pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. This is the part most states require.
- Collision coverage: pays to repair or replace your motorcycle after a crash, regardless of who was at fault, minus your deductible.
- Comprehensive coverage: covers non-crash damage such as theft, fire, natural disasters or vandalism.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage: helps if the driver who hits you has no insurance or not enough.
- Medical payments or personal injury protection (PIP): pays medical costs for you, and in PIP states lost wages, regardless of fault. Availability depends on your state.
Many insurers also offer optional extras such as roadside assistance, cover for custom parts and accessories, and protective gear cover.
How we chose and how to compare insurers
The list keeps the insurers from the original article, updated for brand changes. We have not ranked them. When you compare quotes, check:
- Coverage and limits: quote the same liability limits, deductibles and add-ons with each company.
- How your bike is valued after a total loss: actual cash value or replacement cost, and how much cover there is for custom parts.
- Discounts: safety course, motorcycle licence endorsement, multi-policy, riding-club membership, anti-theft devices and paying in full are common.
- Financial strength: ratings agencies such as AM Best and Moody’s publish financial strength ratings for insurers.
- Complaints: the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Consumer Insurance Search tool and your state insurance department show complaint information.
- Availability: some insurers do not sell motorcycle cover in every state.
The insurers in detail
Progressive
Progressive is one of the best-known motorcycle insurers, offering liability, collision and comprehensive cover, plus optional cover for accessories and roadside help. Progressive’s motorcycle discounts page lists a multi-policy discount, a motorcycle endorsement discount, a safety course discount, an association discount (for example, Harley Owners Group members) and a Safe and Steady Rider discount for experienced riders aged 45 and over. Progressive’s Name Your Price tool and Snapshot are listed on its site as general ways to save, but Snapshot is not listed among its motorcycle discounts. An earlier version of this article said Snapshot rewards safe motorcycle riding; we could not confirm that.
GEICO
GEICO sells motorcycle insurance with the standard liability, collision and comprehensive options. The original article mentioned a discount for completing a motorcycle safety course; GEICO’s current discount list should be checked on its website or with an agent when you request a quote.
Nationwide
Nationwide’s motorcycle page describes cover for medical bills, damage to your bike, liability to others and total loss. It offers custom coverage for up to 12 bikes on one policy, custom parts cover and trailer cover, and separate policies for vintage motorcycles. The original article mentioned discounts for motorcycle organisation members; Nationwide’s current page does not list that discount, so ask when you get a quote.
Allstate
Allstate offers motorcycle insurance with liability, collision and comprehensive options through its agents. An earlier version of this article described a “Motorcycle Diary” feature for logging trips; we found no evidence of that feature and have removed it. Ask an Allstate agent for the discounts available in your state.
Dairyland
Dairyland is owned by Sentry Insurance and focuses on drivers and riders who may struggle to get cover elsewhere, such as those with violations or a lapse in coverage. It sells motorcycle insurance and can file the SR-22 (or, in Florida and Virginia, FR-44) certificates that some states require after serious violations. Availability varies by state.
Foremost
Foremost is part of the Farmers group and sells through independent agents. Its motorcycle programme comes in Saver, Plus and Elite packages and covers cruisers, sport and touring bikes, scooters, trikes, and vintage or custom bikes. Higher packages add benefits such as more custom-parts cover. The original article mentioned trip interruption cover; check the package details with an agent.
Markel
Markel sells specialty personal insurance, including motorcycle, ATV and boat cover, through independent agents. Its motorcycle insurance covers a range of bikes, including cruisers, sport bikes and touring bikes. Ask an appointed agent about safety course discounts and availability in your state.
Liberty Mutual (formerly Safeco)
Safeco was a Liberty Mutual brand sold through independent agents. Liberty Mutual retired the Safeco brand with effect from 25 April 2026, and its personal insurance, including motorcycle cover, is now sold under the Liberty Mutual name. Liberty Mutual said existing Safeco customers keep their agents and their policies. Safeco’s motorcycle page listed discounts such as claims-free and safety course discounts, and optional roadside assistance.
Esurance (no longer selling)
Esurance was an Allstate-owned online insurer. Allstate decided in 2019 to fold Esurance into the Allstate brand and stopped writing new Esurance business in 2023. The “RideSense” programme described in our original article could not be confirmed. If you were an Esurance customer, you would be offered another Allstate company’s policy at renewal.
American Family Insurance
American Family sells motorcycle insurance in the states where it operates. Its motorcycle discounts page lists a motorcycle safety course discount, safety equipment and anti-theft discounts, experienced rider and good driving discounts, and a multi-product discount for bundling policies.
Ways to lower your motorcycle insurance cost
- Take an approved rider safety course. Many insurers give a discount, and the training itself reduces your risk.
- Bundle your motorcycle with car or home insurance from the same company.
- Choose a higher deductible if you can afford to pay it after a claim.
- Fit approved anti-theft devices and store the bike securely.
- Ask about lay-up or seasonal options if you only ride part of the year.
- Keep a clean riding and driving record.
Customer reviews can tell you about claims handling, but treat individual reviews with caution and give more weight to official complaint data from your state insurance department and the NAIC.

Frequently asked questions
Is motorcycle insurance required in the USA?
In most states, yes, at least liability insurance. The rules and minimum limits are set by each state, so check your state’s motor vehicle or insurance department.
Does a motorcycle safety course lower my premium?
Often, yes. Progressive, American Family and Liberty Mutual (formerly Safeco) all list a safety course discount. The amount and the courses accepted vary by insurer and state.
What is an SR-22?
An SR-22 is a certificate your insurer files with the state to prove you carry the required liability insurance, usually after a serious violation or a licence suspension. Florida and Virginia use a similar form called an FR-44 with higher limits.
What happened to Esurance and Safeco?
Allstate stopped selling new Esurance policies in 2023. Liberty Mutual retired the Safeco brand in April 2026; its products are now sold as Liberty Mutual.
Does motorcycle insurance cover my riding gear?
Some policies include limited cover for helmets and protective gear, or offer it as an add-on. Check the policy wording or ask for it when you get a quote.
