UIDAI’s Aadhaar Seva Kendra in Chennai
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), which issues Aadhaar, runs its own Aadhaar Seva Kendras (ASKs) in major cities. UIDAI’s current list (last updated 1 October 2026) shows this centre for Chennai:

Some older guides give a Koyambedu address for the Chennai ASK. UIDAI’s current list shows Anna Nagar East, so rely on the official page rather than older articles.
According to UIDAI, every Aadhaar Seva Kendra:
- is open all seven days, from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, with the last token given at 5:30 pm;
- accepts online appointments and walk-ins;
- offers enrolment, updates of name, address, gender, date of birth, mobile number and email, biometric updates, document updates, and download-and-print of Aadhaar;
- serves all Aadhaar holders, including Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
Tamil Nadu has other UIDAI-run ASKs in cities such as Madurai, Tirunelveli, Vellore, Villupuram and Krishnagiri.
How to find an Aadhaar centre near you in Chennai
- On uidai.gov.in, click “Find Aadhaar Centre” or “Seva Kendra Locator”. This opens the Bhuvan Aadhaar centre map (bhuvan-app3.nrsc.gov.in/aadhaar), maintained by ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre.
- Search by PIN code, by distance from your location, or state-wise (Tamil Nadu, then your district and sub-district).
- Choose the service you need, such as adult enrolment, child enrolment, a name, date of birth or gender update, an address update, or a biometric update. Not every centre offers every service.
- Check the centre’s address and, if possible, call before you go. The locator notes that its data is indicative.

Documents to carry
An earlier version of this article gave a short list of documents. UIDAI now publishes a detailed “List of acceptable documents for enrolment and update”, and the rules differ for new enrolment and for updates. For an adult’s new enrolment, common examples are:
- Proof of identity and address: valid Indian passport, ration card or e-ration card, voter ID card, or a service photo identity card issued by the central or state government or a PSU.
- Proof of identity only: driving licence.
- Proof of address only: electricity, water, gas, landline, post-paid mobile or broadband bill not older than three months; a registered sale agreement or gift deed; or a rent, lease or leave-and-licence agreement.
For updates, the list is wider. It includes, for example, a bank or post office passbook with photograph and a bank or post office account statement not older than three months, both of which the old version of this article listed. Always take originals. They are scanned and returned to you.
Applying: what happens at the centre
You cannot apply for a new Aadhaar entirely online. You can download the enrolment form in advance or fill one in at the centre (see our guide to downloading the Aadhaar enrolment and update forms), but the application itself is made in person:
- The operator enters your details from the form and checks your original documents.
- Your photograph, fingerprints and iris scans are captured. For children under 5, only a photograph is taken.
- You get an acknowledgement slip with your Enrolment ID. Keep it safe: you need it to check status and to download e-Aadhaar.
- According to UIDAI’s Citizen’s Charter, Aadhaar is normally generated within 30 days for children and within 180 days for adults. The printed letter is then sent through India Post.
The old version of this page said the process takes 60 to 90 days. UIDAI’s current service standards are the ones above. You can download e-Aadhaar as soon as your number is generated, without waiting for the letter.
Fees
UIDAI’s published charges, inclusive of taxes, apply at every centre:
- enrolment is free;
- a separate demographic update costs ₹75;
- a biometric update costs ₹125, but the mandatory updates at ages 5–7 and 15–17 are free, and updates between ages 7 and 15 are free until 30 September 2027;
- a document update costs ₹75 at a centre and is free on myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in until 14 June 2027;
- a download and colour print costs ₹40.
Where Aadhaar is used today
The earlier version of this article listed Aadhaar’s “advantages”. Some of those have changed:
- Aadhaar is still widely accepted as proof of identity and address.
- Aadhaar is mandatory for PAN and filing income tax returns.
- Aadhaar can be required for government subsidies and benefits under Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act, many of which, such as the LPG subsidy, are paid by Direct Benefit Transfer.
- Aadhaar is commonly linked to Employees’ Provident Fund accounts through the Universal Account Number (UAN), and can be linked to DigiLocker to fetch documents.
- Aadhaar can be used to sign documents electronically through Aadhaar eSign, which the old list called a “digital certificate”.
- For opening a bank account, including under Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar is now optional, not compulsory. The Supreme Court struck down compulsory bank linking in 2018, and the 2019 amendment allows only voluntary use of Aadhaar for KYC. Banks and other regulated entities still accept Aadhaar as KYC proof, but you can use other documents.
- The old list mentioned “passport in 10 days” with Aadhaar. We could not verify a current rule like this, so it has been removed.
