Quick answer: Patient management software, also called practice management or clinic management software, keeps patient records, appointments, prescriptions and billing in one system. Established options include AdvancedMD, athenaOne, DrChrono, Tebra (formerly Kareo), eClinicalWorks, CareCloud, PrognoCIS and CGM APRIMA in the US, Simplex HIMES in the Middle East and Halemind for Indian clinics and hospitals. Our original list of 15 had two Kareo entries, which are now one, and three products that no longer exist, so this updated list has 11.

Best Patient Management Software & System

If you are a healthcare provider, your first priority is your patients. Billing, scheduling and paperwork can easily push patient management into second place. A patient management system, also called clinic management software, medical practice management (PM) software or, when it includes clinical records, an electronic health record (EHR) system, automates that work. It tracks patient details, diagnoses, encounters, prescriptions and payments within one organisation.

We first published this list in 2020. In October 2026 we checked every product on its vendor’s own website. This version describes each product from the vendor’s current documentation, notes renamed and merged products, and explains which ones we dropped. We have not tested these products, nothing here is a paid placement, and this article is not medical or legal advice. Most of these vendors sell mainly to US practices, so their compliance statements refer to the US Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and US certification programmes.

How to choose patient management software

  • Match the software to your setting. A single-doctor clinic, a multi-specialty group and a hospital need different things. Hospital information systems handle wards, operating theatres, labs and pharmacy; ambulatory EHRs focus on outpatient visits.
  • Check local compliance. US vendors talk about HIPAA and ONC certification. In India, check how the product handles personal data under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and whether it supports Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) health records if that matters to you. Ask the vendor directly; do not assume.
  • Look at billing and claims. US products are built around insurance claims and revenue cycle management. If most of your patients pay directly, a simpler billing module may be enough. For collections workflows outside healthcare, see our guide to accounts receivable software.
  • Check data migration and exit terms. Ask how you will get your records out if you switch vendors later.
  • Get a demo with your own workflow. Most vendors sell through demos and quotes. Bring a real day’s schedule and see how many clicks a routine visit takes.

The 11 systems in detail

Simplex HIMES

Simplex HIMES is a hospital and clinic information system sold in the United Arab Emirates, the wider Middle East and Africa. Its modules cover hospital management, clinic EMR with revenue cycle management, laboratory, radiology and PACS imaging, pharmacy, document management, a patient portal and mobile app, and HL7 interoperability. It is delivered over a private cloud. The original article described it as handling appointments, treatment plans, drug inventory, radiology and point of sale, which still fits.

AdvancedMD

AdvancedMD is a suite for US medical, mental health and physical therapy practices. It combines electronic health records, practice management, patient engagement, revenue cycle management, AI automation and reporting. It also offers a managed billing service and a self-service version called AdvancedMD Now for small mental health practices. AdvancedMD says it is HIPAA-supported, hosted on AWS and ONC certified.

athenaOne

athenaOne from athenahealth is a cloud system for ambulatory practices that combines an EHR, practice management and medical billing, and patient engagement. athenahealth highlights specialty-specific clinical workflows and billing services. The original article quoted a figure of 160,000 providers that we could not confirm on athenahealth’s site, so we have removed it.

DrChrono

DrChrono, now operated by EverHealth, is a cloud EHR for independent practices that brings scheduling, clinical documentation, billing and revenue cycle management, a patient portal and telehealth into one system. It has long been known as a mobile-first EHR: DrChrono says it was the first mobile EHR to become an Apple Mobility Partner and cites Black Book’s mobile EHR ranking. DrChrono describes its telehealth tools as HIPAA-compliant.

Tebra (formerly Kareo)

Our original list had two separate entries, “Kareo Medical Billing” and “Kareo Clinical EHR”. Kareo is now Tebra: kareo.com redirects to tebra.com. Tebra sells a cloud EHR together with billing, patient payments, a patient experience module (scheduling, digital intake, reminders and messaging) and practice marketing tools, for independent practices and billing companies.

PrognoCIS

PrognoCIS is a cloud EHR and practice management system with medical billing, a patient portal, telemedicine and analytics. It now targets multi-provider, multi-location and enterprise ambulatory practices, as well as occupational medicine. An earlier version of this article called PrognoCIS “a rather new provider”; the vendor now cites more than 24 years in the market. It describes itself as ONC certified and HIPAA compliant.

Halemind

Halemind offers web-based EHR and hospital management software, with separate products for private clinics, hospitals, pharmacies and laboratories. Its feature list includes appointment scheduling, patient registration with unique patient IDs, outpatient and inpatient management, operating theatre and ward management, billing, lab and pharmacy management, a patient portal, reminders and analytics. The testimonials on its site come from hospitals and clinics in India.

AllegianceMD

AllegianceMD is an all-in-one EHR and practice management system that runs in a web browser on Windows, Mac, iPad or Linux without installation. It includes electronic prescribing (including controlled substances), lab ordering and results, patient engagement tools and a mobile app for Android and iOS. Patients can complete forms online, as the original article said.

CareCloud

CareCloud, a US company listed on NASDAQ, offers revenue cycle management, a cloud EHR, practice management, patient experience tools, telehealth and AI-based clinical documentation. It also provides billing services, and in hospital IT it has combined with Medsphere. The original “CareCloud Charts” product name is no longer prominent; CareCloud now sells its EHR as part of an all-in-one suite.

eClinicalWorks

eClinicalWorks is a cloud EHR and practice management vendor that describes itself as the largest cloud-based EHR provider in the US. Its current version (V12) adds AI tools, and its patient engagement features include self-scheduling, check-in, telehealth and secure messaging, alongside revenue cycle management services, value-based care tools and an AI contact centre product called healow Genie.

CGM APRIMA

Aprima EHR now belongs to CompuGroup Medical (CGM) and is sold as CGM APRIMA; aprima.com redirects to CGM’s US site. CGM describes it as an AI-enabled EHR and practice management system that adapts to each doctor’s workflow and is accessible through a browser and mobile app, with optional hosting on CGM’s cloud. The original article mentioned the Aprima Mobile app; CGM’s current equivalent is the CGM APRIMA+ browser and mobile app.

Products removed or merged

  • Kareo Medical Billing and Kareo Clinical EHR: merged into the single Tebra entry above.
  • NHCircle: the nhcircle.com domain now shows an unrelated website, so the product appears to have closed.
  • Euclid: we could not find an official site for this medical management product; the likely domain is listed for sale.
  • AntWorks Healthcare: the antworks.com domain now shows only a parked page, so we could not verify the product.

For patient-facing tools such as reminders, portals and digital intake, see our list of patient engagement software. Aesthetic and cosmetic practices may prefer the specialist systems in our guide to plastic surgery practice software.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an EHR and practice management software?

An electronic health record (EHR) holds clinical information such as diagnoses, notes, prescriptions and results. Practice management software runs the business side: scheduling, registration, billing and claims. Most vendors on this list sell both as one system.

Is US software suitable for an Indian clinic?

Some US systems are built around US insurance claims and US regulations, which an Indian clinic may not need. Check whether the vendor supports Indian billing, local data storage and Indian data protection rules before you sign up.

What happened to Kareo?

Kareo now operates as Tebra. The kareo.com website redirects to tebra.com, which sells the combined EHR, billing and patient experience platform.

Is cloud software safe for patient records?

Cloud systems can be secure, but security depends on the vendor’s controls and your own practices, such as strong passwords and access rights. Ask for the vendor’s security certifications and data processing terms.

Checked in October 2026 against each vendor’s own website, including the product pages of AdvancedMD, athenahealth, DrChrono, Tebra, PrognoCIS, Halemind, AllegianceMD, CareCloud, eClinicalWorks, CompuGroup Medical and Simplex HIMES. Compliance claims are the vendors’ own. Confirm features, local suitability and pricing with the vendor before you buy.
