Quick answer: Mullvad VPN is still running in October 2026. It is a Swedish service, run by Mullvad VPN AB in Gothenburg and wholly owned by its two founders, and it still charges one flat price of €5 a month however long you pay for. You sign up with a randomly generated account number instead of an email address, can use up to 5 devices and can even pay in cash. Mullvad has published a long series of independent security audits. It now supports only the WireGuard protocol, and its network (about 566 servers in 50 countries) is smaller than many rivals’.

This review is based on Mullvad’s own website, policies and published audit announcements. We have not tested the service ourselves. An earlier version of this article reported streaming and speed results from “a review of a user” and called Mullvad “100% secured” and “extremely trustworthy”. We have removed those claims because they had no named, dated source. Mullvad’s strong privacy record is described below with sources instead.
Who runs Mullvad?
- Company: Mullvad VPN AB, Box 53049, 400 14 Gothenburg, Sweden. Its parent company is Amagicom AB.
- Owners: Mullvad says both companies are 100% owned by its founders, Fredrik Strömberg and Daniel Berntsson. It is not part of a larger VPN group.
- Launched: March 2009.
Pricing (as of October 2026)
As of October 2026, Mullvad’s pricing page lists a flat €5 a month, including VAT, whether you pay for one month, one year or longer. That was shown as about $5.60, £4.23 or SEK 56 at the time. There are no tiers, upsells or free plan. Mullvad says its price has not changed since it launched in 2009.
- Refunds: a 14-day money-back guarantee, except for cash payments.
- Payment methods: cash by post (in several currencies), Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Monero, bank wire, credit card, PayPal, Swish and several European bank-payment methods. Cryptocurrency payments get a 10% discount.
- Devices: up to 5 devices per account.
The original article quoted about $5.42, which matched the €5 price at the exchange rate of the time. It also said you could buy prepaid gift cards “with TorGuard”; that referred to a different VPN company and has been removed.
Accounts without an email address
Mullvad does not ask for your name or email address. When you sign up, it generates a random account number, which is the only thing you need to log in. The original article listed this as a strength, and also noted that the account-number system can confuse some customers. Write the number down somewhere safe, because Mullvad cannot recover it from an email address.
Features Mullvad documents today
- Server network: Mullvad’s live server list showed 566 servers in 50 countries and 91 cities in October 2026, some owned and some rented. The original article’s figures (360 servers in 30 countries, then 663 in 36) were from different dates and are out of date.
- WireGuard only: Mullvad removed OpenVPN from its apps in late 2025 and planned to switch off its last OpenVPN servers on 15 January 2026. Its server list now shows only WireGuard and bridge servers.
- Censorship circumvention: as the original article noted, Mullvad offers bridge servers and obfuscation options designed to help in countries that block VPNs.
- Kill switch and multihop: the original article described the kill switch and multihop connections; Mullvad added WireGuard multihop to its desktop apps in March 2022.
- Quantum resistance: since February 2025, Mullvad’s apps on all platforms use quantum-resistant WireGuard tunnels by default.
- DAITA: launched in May 2024, it is designed to protect against traffic analysis.
- RAM-only servers: Mullvad completed its move to RAM-only VPN servers in September 2023.
- Open source: its apps are open source, as the original article said.
- No port forwarding: Mullvad no longer supports port forwarding, which matters to some torrent users.
Privacy, audits and the 2023 police visit
Mullvad’s no-logging policy says it does not log user activity. It keeps only the data it needs to run accounts and payments, and Swedish accounting law requires it to keep some payment information for seven years.
The original article noted Mullvad’s first independent audit results, published in June 2020. Since then, Mullvad has published many more, including:
- infrastructure audits by Cure53 (first published in early 2021, and again in June 2024) and by Radically Open Security (August 2023);
- app audits, including a December 2024 report and Android app assessments by NCC Group (March 2025) and Leviathan Security Group (June 2026);
- an X41 D-Sec audit of its account and payment services (published January 2026).
On 18 April 2023, officers from Sweden’s National Operations Department visited Mullvad’s Gothenburg office with a search warrant to seize computers with customer data. Mullvad says that, after it showed that no such data existed, the police left without taking anything. An audit or a past event like this does not guarantee how a service will behave in future, but it is a useful record.
Streaming, torrenting and India
The original article said Mullvad did not unblock Netflix, Hulu or BBC iPlayer in its tests. Streaming services block VPN servers from time to time, and Mullvad does not market itself as a streaming VPN. A VPN does not make sharing copyrighted files legal. In April 2022, India’s CERT-In told VPN providers to keep customer records for five years; check Mullvad’s server list for its current locations. VPN legality varies by country.
