How to Update Your Address in Aadhaar Online or at a Centre

Quick answer: If your mobile number is registered with Aadhaar, you can change your address online on the myAadhaar portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) or in the Aadhaar app by uploading a proof of address. If you have no address proof in your own name, you can borrow the address of a family member who has Aadhaar, with their approval. Otherwise, visit any Aadhaar centre with an original proof of address; a separate address update there costs ₹75. Updates are normally processed within 30 days.

Ways to update your Aadhaar address

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) currently offers these routes:

An earlier version of this article described a third option: posting an update form to UIDAI post boxes in Chhindwara or Hyderabad. UIDAI’s current “Updating data on Aadhaar” page lists only two modes, online and at an enrolment centre. Do not post your documents; use one of the routes above.

Documents accepted as proof of address

The document must be valid, in your own name, and show the same address you enter. According to UIDAI’s list of acceptable documents for update (June 2026), accepted proofs of address include:

• valid Indian passport;
• ration card or e-ration card, and voter ID card;
• passbook of a scheduled commercial bank, state co-operative bank or post office savings account, with photograph and the official’s stamp and signature;
• bank, credit card or post office account statement, stamped and signed, not older than three months;
• electricity, water, gas, landline, post-paid mobile or broadband bill, not older than three months;
• property tax receipt, not older than one year;
• a registered sale agreement or gift deed, or a registered or unregistered rent, lease or leave-and-licence agreement;
• government or PSU service photo ID card, pensioner photo ID card, and accommodation allotment letter (not older than one year);
• a certificate in UIDAI’s standard format signed by an MP, MLA, MLC, municipal councillor, Group A or B gazetted officer, tehsildar, or (in rural areas) a village panchayat head or equivalent. The certificate is valid for three months.

A driving licence is not accepted as proof of address. The earlier version of this article listed it, so please note the change. Check the full list on uidai.gov.in before you upload or visit.

Update your address online on myAadhaar

1. Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.
2. Choose the address update service and the option to update using a proof of address document.
3. Enter your new address in English. It is transliterated into your regional language, and you can correct the transliteration. UIDAI supports Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu for online address updates.
4. Upload a clear, coloured scan of the original document. The address you type must match the address on the document.
5. Pay any fee shown and submit. You receive a Service Request Number (SRN) on screen and by SMS. Download the acknowledgement or invoice.
6. Track the request with the SRN on myAadhaar.

UIDAI’s Citizen’s Charter says demographic updates are normally completed within 30 days. The earlier version of this article said 90 days.

Update your address in the Aadhaar app

The Aadhaar app is replacing the older mAadhaar app. According to UIDAI’s Aadhaar app FAQ (updated September 2026):

1. Open the app and log in with your 6-digit PIN.
2. Go to Services, then Address Update. If the app is registered on a different number from your Aadhaar-registered mobile, you also verify an OTP.
3. Upload your document (JPG, PNG or PDF) and fill in the new address.
4. Check the preview in English and your local language.
5. Complete face authentication and pay ₹75.
6. Download the acknowledgement slip with your SRN to track the request.

UIDAI says mobile number and address updates through the app take up to 30 days to process.

No proof of address? Use a family member’s address

The Head of Family (HoF) option helps if your rent agreement or bills are in someone else’s name, for example after marriage or when living with parents. The HoF must be 18 or older and be your parent, legal guardian, spouse, child or ward, or sibling, according to UIDAI’s Form 1.

1. Start an address update on myAadhaar or in the Aadhaar app and choose the Head of Family option.
2. Enter the HoF’s Aadhaar number and your relationship. For privacy, none of the HoF’s details are shown to you.
3. Provide a proof of relationship naming both of you, such as a marriage certificate, a ration card or a passport. If you have none, UIDAI accepts a self-declaration by the HoF in its prescribed format, valid for three months.
4. Pay the fee. The HoF is notified and must approve the request, on myAadhaar or in the app under Family Member Request, within 30 days.
5. If the HoF rejects the request or does not respond in time, the request is closed and you are told by SMS.

UIDAI’s Citizen’s Charter puts the normal processing time for HoF-based online updates at up to 60 days, including the 30-day approval window.

Update your address at an Aadhaar centre

1. Find a centre using “Find Aadhaar Centre” on uidai.gov.in. See our guide to finding an Aadhaar centre near you.
2. Take your original proof of address. It is scanned and returned after verification.
3. Fill in the update form (Form 1 for most adults), or let the operator enter the details. Our guide to filling in the Aadhaar update form explains each section.
4. Authenticate with your fingerprint or iris, pay ₹75 and keep the acknowledgement slip with the Update Request Number.

A centre is also the only route if no mobile number is registered with your Aadhaar. Registering a mobile number for the first time needs a centre visit too.

Fees: what changed

The earlier version of this article said online and postal updates were free and a centre charged ₹25. According to UIDAI’s current published charges:

• A demographic update (which includes address) done on its own costs ₹75 at a centre.
• An address update done together with a biometric update has no separate charge.
• An address update in the Aadhaar app costs ₹75, according to UIDAI’s app FAQ.
• A document update (re-submitting proof of identity and address for your existing details) is free on myAadhaar until 14 June 2027. This is a different service from changing your address.

Fees and free windows change, so check the amount shown before you pay.

Common reasons address updates are rejected

According to UIDAI, online address requests are rejected for invalid documents when:

• the document is not on the accepted list;
• the document is not in the name of the Aadhaar holder;
• the address entered does not match the address on the document;
• the uploaded image is unclear or not a coloured scan of the original.

After your address is updated

Frequently asked questions

How many times can I change my address in Aadhaar?

UIDAI sets limits for name, gender and date of birth updates, but not for address. You can update your address whenever it changes.

Can I update my address without a registered mobile number?

Not online. Online and app updates need a mobile number registered with Aadhaar, so visit an Aadhaar centre instead.

Can I change my name or date of birth online at the same time?

No. Only the address (and documents) can be updated on myAadhaar, and the app handles only address and mobile updates. Name, date of birth, gender and biometrics need a centre visit.

My rent agreement is unregistered. Will it be accepted?

Yes. UIDAI’s list accepts registered or unregistered rent, lease and leave-and-licence agreements, as long as the agreement is valid and in your name.

Do I need a new Aadhaar card after updating my address?

No. Your Aadhaar number does not change. Download the updated e-Aadhaar, or order a PVC card if you want a printed copy.
