Boca Chica Beach, near the SpaceX Starbase site, can be closed at short notice for rocket launches, so check before you go.

Best Beaches In Texas

Texas has about 367 miles of Gulf beaches, plus thousands of miles of bay and estuary shoreline, according to figures published with the Texas General Land Office. (An earlier version of this article said 350 miles.) The coast runs from the Louisiana border to Mexico, and its beaches range from busy resort towns to the longest stretch of wild barrier-island coastline in the country. The Gulf of Mexico is called the Gulf of America by the US federal government since 2025; you will see both names locally.

The 20 beaches below are grouped by area, from the Upper Coast near Houston to the Rio Grande Valley.

Before you go: Texas beach tips

  • Beach driving and parking: on many Texas beaches you can drive and park on the sand, but some areas need a beach parking permit. Follow posted signs.
  • Water quality: the Texas Beach Watch programme tests coastal beaches for bacteria and posts advisories. Check before swimming, especially after heavy rain.
  • Safety: rip currents are common along the Gulf beaches, especially near jetties. Swim near lifeguards where available and obey warning flags.
  • Hurricane season: runs from 1 June to 30 November.

Upper Coast (Houston and Galveston area)

1. Stewart Beach, Galveston Island

Galveston Island has many beaches, but Stewart Beach is one of the most popular with families. It has lifeguards in season, restrooms and showers, and chairs and umbrellas to rent, so you do not have to bring everything with you. A parking fee is charged.

2. Jamaica Beach, Galveston Island

Jamaica Beach is a small beach community on the quieter west end of Galveston Island. It is good for surf fishing, building sandcastles and shell-hunting. The water is not Caribbean-clear, but the west end is usually less crowded than the beaches by the Galveston seawall.

3. Crystal Beach, Bolivar Peninsula

Crystal Beach is the main community on the Bolivar Peninsula, which separates Galveston Bay from the Gulf. It is a laid-back area of beach houses and wide, open sand. The peninsula is a well-known birdwatching area, especially during spring and autumn migration.

You can reach it on the free state-run car ferry from Galveston, which crosses in about 20 minutes but can have long queues on summer weekends, or by road via Highway 87 from the east. (An earlier version of this article said Crystal Beach can be reached only by ferry.)

4. Surfside Beach

Surfside Beach, near Freeport south of Houston, is one of the closest Gulf beaches to the city, which makes it a popular day trip. It has fewer facilities than Galveston but is good for swimming, fishing and windsurfing in calm conditions. Check local signs for parking and beach driving rules.

Middle Coast (Matagorda Bay to Rockport)

5. Matagorda Bay Nature Park

Matagorda Bay Nature Park sits where the Colorado River meets the Gulf, about 100 miles south-west of Houston. Run by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), it combines a Gulf beach, river frontage, marshes and dunes, so it is excellent for birdwatching, fishing and beachcombing. It has RV sites, cabins, a boat ramp and a fishing pier. As of October 2026, LCRA lists day-use entry at $5 for adults, with children 12 and under free; check the LCRA Parks website before you go.

6. Magnolia Beach

Magnolia Beach is a small community on Lavaca Bay in Calhoun County, a few miles from Port Lavaca. It is known for free, first-come, first-served camping right on the beach (with a 14-day limit), picnic tables and showers, and it is a good place to look for shells and hermit crabs or simply relax. There are no shops, so stock up in Port Lavaca first. The 8-mile length given in an earlier version of this article could not be confirmed and has been removed.

7. Lighthouse Beach, Port Lavaca

Lighthouse Beach and Bird Sanctuary in Port Lavaca has a children’s splash pad and playground, an RV park and the Formosa Wetlands Walkway, a boardwalk through the marsh to a birding tower. It is better for families and birdwatchers than for swimming, since much of the shoreline is marsh. A small daily parking fee is charged.

8. Alamo Beach

Alamo Beach is a small residential community on the shore of Lavaca Bay, about two miles south-east of Port Lavaca. It is mainly a place for holiday rentals, fishing, boating and birdwatching rather than a large public beach, so renting a house by the water is the best way to enjoy it. Magnolia Beach is close by.

9. Rockport Beach

Rockport Beach is a crescent-shaped beach on Aransas Bay, run by the Aransas County Navigation District. It was the first beach in Texas to be certified as a Blue Wave Beach by the Clean Beaches Coalition, a national award for clean, well-managed beaches, and it has held the certification for many years. Its calm bay water and facilities make it popular with families.

Coastal Bend (Corpus Christi area)

10. San Jose Island

San Jose Island, across the channel from Port Aransas, is a privately owned barrier island with about 21 miles of undeveloped beach. Visitors may use only the beach below the mean high-tide line, and vehicles are not allowed on the shore. The Jetty Boat from Fisherman’s Wharf in Port Aransas is the only public transport to the island. There are no services, so bring water and everything else you need.

11. Port Aransas Beach

Port Aransas, at the northern end of Mustang Island, is one of the best Texas beach towns for families, with about 18 miles of sandy shore where you can find plenty of space. You can climb the dunes, bodysurf, fish or simply relax. Vehicles parked on the beach need a beach parking permit, sold locally. Spring break and summer are the busiest times.

12. Mustang Island State Park

Mustang Island State Park, between Port Aransas and Corpus Christi’s North Padre Island area, protects miles of beach and dunes. You can swim, fish, camp on the beach, kayak the paddling trail on the bay side or watch birds. Its location just east of Corpus Christi makes it an easy weekend escape.

13. Packery Channel Beach (South Packery Jetty)

Packery Channel is a man-made inlet between Mustang Island and North Padre Island, lined by two long jetties. The beaches beside it are usually less crowded than others nearby, and the jetties are a popular fishing spot. Currents in the channel are strong, so do not swim near the jetties.

14. North Beach (Corpus Christi Beach)

North Beach, formerly called Corpus Christi Beach, is the city’s beach on the bay north of downtown, close to the USS Lexington museum ship and the Texas State Aquarium. You can swim, build sandcastles, fly kites or relax in the sun.

15. McGee Beach, Corpus Christi

McGee Beach is a small, calm bay beach in downtown Corpus Christi, along the seawall on Shoreline Boulevard. The water is usually calm and free of seaweed, which makes it a favourite with families with young children. It has free parking along the seawall, restrooms, outdoor showers, rentals and mobile lifeguard patrols. Dogs must be kept on a leash. (An earlier version of this article placed McGee Beach on Galveston Island; it is in Corpus Christi.)

Padre Island and the Rio Grande Valley

16. Padre Island National Seashore

Padre Island National Seashore, south of Corpus Christi, protects 66 miles of wild coastline on the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. The Gulf of Mexico lies on one side and the Laguna Madre on the other. Beyond the developed beach areas, visitors with four-wheel-drive vehicles can drive and camp along the shore. In summer the park holds public releases of sea turtle hatchlings. An entrance fee applies; check the National Park Service website.

17. Malaquite Beach

Malaquite Beach is the main developed beach within Padre Island National Seashore, near the visitor centre. It is a good place to fly a kite, build a sandcastle, swim or watch for wildlife, and wildflowers bloom on the dunes behind it in season. Vehicles are not allowed on this stretch of beach, which makes it quieter and safer for families.

18. South Padre Island

South Padre Island, at the southern tip of Texas, is the state’s best-known resort island. Its beaches are famous as a spring break destination for college students, with plenty of beach bars and restaurants. Families tend to visit in summer, and the bay side on the Laguna Madre is good for sunsets, kayaking and watersports.

19. Boca Chica Beach

Boca Chica Beach is a remote, undeveloped beach east of Brownsville, near the mouth of the Rio Grande and the Mexican border. It is quiet and wild, with no facilities. (An earlier version of this article placed it on South Padre Island; it is on the mainland, south of the island.)

The beach lies next to SpaceX’s Starbase launch site, and the beach and the road to it are closed for rocket launches and other operations. Under a 2025 state law, the city of Starbase gained authority over many of these closures, which are being challenged in court. Check the latest closure notices from Cameron County or the City of Starbase before you drive there.

20. Isla Blanca Park, South Padre Island

Isla Blanca Park, run by Cameron County at the southern tip of South Padre Island, has about a mile of Gulf beach, rebuilt beachfront pavilions with restrooms, rinse stations and picnic areas, and a lighted boardwalk. Beside it, the jetty at Brazos Santiago Pass is one of the most popular fishing and surfing spots on the Texas coast; the rocks are unfenced, so wear closed-toe shoes. The park’s large RV campground was closed for a rebuild that began in October 2025 and was still not finished a year later, so check with Cameron County Parks before planning a stay. Entry is charged per vehicle.

An earlier version of this article promised 20 beaches but listed only 19; Isla Blanca Park has been added to complete the list.
