Quick answer: Surendranagar is easiest to reach by train. Surendranagar Junction (station code SUNR) is on the main Western Railway line between Ahmedabad and Rajkot, and many long-distance trains stop there. The city has no airport, so fly to Ahmedabad or to the new Rajkot International Airport at Hirasar and continue by road or rail. Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) buses link Surendranagar with most cities in the state.

Surendranagar is the headquarters of Surendranagar district in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region. The area is historically known as Jhalawad (also spelt Zalawad), the land of the Jhala Rajputs, who ruled many of the small princely states that later merged to form the district. The city sits next to the older town of Wadhwan and is a common stop on journeys between Ahmedabad and Saurashtra.
An earlier version of this article called Surendranagar one of the smallest districts in Gujarat. That is not correct: the district covers about 10,489 square kilometres, so the claim has been removed.

How to reach Surendranagar by train
Surendranagar Junction (SUNR) is the city’s main station. It belongs to the Rajkot division of Western Railway and sits on the Viramgam–Okha main line, which links Ahmedabad with Rajkot, Jamnagar, Dwarka and Okha. Branch lines also run from Surendranagar towards Bhavnagar and towards Dhrangadhra. The station has six platforms, and trains connect it with Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Howrah and many other cities.
The city also has two smaller stations, Joravarnagar and Surendranagar Gate, where only a few trains stop. For most journeys, book to Surendranagar Junction.
Earlier versions of this article printed a long list of train numbers. Many of those numbers and services have since changed, been renumbered or been withdrawn, so the list has been removed. To find current trains:
- Open the Indian Railways National Train Enquiry System (enquiry.indianrail.gov.in) or IRCTC.
- Enter your starting station and “Surendranagar Junction (SUNR)” as the destination.
- Check the days of running, because many long-distance trains run only on certain days of the week.
- Book early for festival seasons and school holidays, when trains on the Saurashtra routes fill up quickly.
How to reach Surendranagar by bus
GSRTC, the state-run bus operator, runs services to Surendranagar from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Morbi, Wankaner, Vadodara, Bhavnagar and many smaller towns. Private operators also run buses on longer routes, including overnight services.
- Check GSRTC timetables and book seats on the official GSRTC website (gsrtc.in) or its app.
- For private buses, confirm the boarding and drop-off points before you travel, because some stop on the highway rather than in the city.
How to reach Surendranagar by car
Surendranagar is linked to the rest of Gujarat by state highways. The Ahmedabad–Rajkot route is part of National Highway 47, which runs through Limbdi in Surendranagar district; drivers from Ahmedabad or Rajkot usually use NH 47 and turn off for Surendranagar. Road conditions on the main highways are generally good, but they carry heavy goods traffic, so drive carefully and avoid long night drives if you are new to the route.
How to reach Surendranagar by air
Surendranagar does not have its own airport. You have two practical options:
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad: the largest airport in Gujarat, with the widest choice of domestic and international flights. Continue to Surendranagar by train, bus or taxi.
- Rajkot International Airport, Hirasar: a new greenfield airport near the Ahmedabad–Rajkot highway, inaugurated on 27 July 2023. All of Rajkot’s scheduled flights moved there from the old city airport in September 2023, so make sure any taxi or cab booking says Hirasar, not the old Rajkot airport.
An earlier version of this article gave distances to “Rajkot Airport” and Ahmedabad Airport. Because Rajkot’s flights have moved to Hirasar, those figures were out of date and have been removed. Check road distances on a map app before you book a taxi, and check current flights on the airline websites.
