Quick answer: Morbi has no airport, and only a few long-distance trains stop there, so most visitors reach the city by road or change trains at Wankaner Junction. The nearest airport is Rajkot International Airport at Hirasar, which took over all of Rajkot’s commercial flights in September 2023. Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) and private operators run buses to Morbi from most big Gujarat cities, and National Highway 27 passes through the city.

Morbi, the headquarters of Morbi district in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region, is one of India’s biggest centres for ceramic and vitrified tiles, and it is sometimes called the “Paris of Saurashtra”. The city lies on the Machchhu river, about 60 km from Rajkot. Because of the tile industry, traders, agents and business visitors arrive every day. The city’s travel links are simple once you know them, but they can confuse a first-time visitor.

How to reach Morbi by train
Morbi railway station (station code MVI) is on the Wankaner–Maliya Miyana branch line in the Rajkot division of Western Railway. It is a small station, and few long-distance trains call there. Timetable listings show a weekly superfast train between Gandhidham and Mumbai’s Bandra Terminus, and an express between Gandhidham and Kamakhya (Guwahati), passing through Morbi on certain days of the week. Check their days of running before you plan around them.
For most journeys, the practical route is:
- Take a train to Wankaner Junction, which is on the main line between Rajkot and Ahmedabad (via Surendranagar) and is served by many more trains.
- Change to one of the DEMU (diesel local) trains that shuttle between Wankaner and Morbi through the day. Timetable listings show the trip taking about 45 minutes.
- Alternatively, take a taxi or bus from Wankaner or Rajkot if the train timings do not suit you.
Train numbers, timings and days of running change, sometimes at short notice. Check them on the Indian Railways National Train Enquiry System (enquiry.indianrail.gov.in) or IRCTC before you travel. For trains to the junction, see our guide on how to reach Wankaner.
An earlier version of this article said Morbi has no direct rail connection to India’s major cities. A few long-distance trains do stop at Morbi, but for most routes changing at Wankaner is still the easiest option.
How to reach Morbi by bus
Morbi is well connected by bus to the rest of Gujarat. GSRTC, the state-run bus operator, runs services from cities such as Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Bhuj, Gandhidham, Vadodara and Surat. Several private operators also run buses, including overnight services on longer routes.
- Check GSRTC timetables and book seats on the official GSRTC website (gsrtc.in) or its app.
- For private buses, compare operators on a booking platform or call the operator directly, and confirm the boarding and drop-off points, since many private buses stop on the highway rather than at the Morbi bus station.
For depot phone numbers, see this list of Morbi ST Depot enquiry numbers, and confirm timings with the depot before you travel.
How to reach Morbi by car
National Highway 27 passes through Morbi, linking it with Bamanbore to the south and Samakhiali (towards Kutch and the Kandla port area) to the north. Bamanbore is also where National Highway 47 from Ahmedabad meets NH 27, so the usual road route from Ahmedabad joins NH 27 there. From Rajkot, Morbi is about 60 km away by road.
The roads around Morbi carry heavy goods traffic because of the ceramic industry, so allow extra time, especially on weekdays. An earlier version of this article referred to the highway as National Highway 8A; India renumbered its national highways in 2010, and the route through Morbi is now part of NH 27.
How to reach Morbi by air
Morbi does not have its own airport. The nearest is Rajkot International Airport at Hirasar, a new greenfield airport that was inaugurated in July 2023. All scheduled commercial flights moved there from the old Rajkot airport in September 2023, so make sure your taxi driver knows you mean the new airport. From Hirasar, continue to Morbi by taxi or bus.
Airlines and routes change often, so check current flights on the airline websites or a booking site. If there is no convenient flight to Rajkot, you can fly into Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which has many more flights, and continue by road or rail.
An earlier version of this article said Rajkot Airport was 65 km away and that Jet Airways and Air India flew from Rajkot to Mumbai. Jet Airways stopped flying in 2019, and Rajkot’s flights now use the new Hirasar airport, so those details have been removed.
Planning your visit to Morbi
- Business visitors: many of the ceramic units are outside the city, so arrange local transport in advance or hire a taxi for the day.
- Combining trips: Morbi fits easily into a Saurashtra itinerary with Rajkot, Wankaner and Surendranagar.
- Sightseeing: Mani Mandir is one of the city’s best-known landmarks. Morbi’s Jhulto Pul suspension bridge collapsed on 30 October 2022, killing 135 people, so check locally which heritage sites are open before you go.
