Quick answer: The fastest way from Delhi to Ahmedabad is a direct flight of about an hour and a half between Indira Gandhi International Airport and Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. By train, the overnight Swarna Jayanti Rajdhani Express (12957/12958) covers about 929 km in roughly 12 to 13 hours. Several trains now start or end at Sabarmati, in Ahmedabad, rather than Ahmedabad Junction, so check the station on your ticket. Delhi to Ahmedabad by train
The main rail route runs through Rajasthan, via Jaipur, Ajmer, Abu Road and Palanpur, and is about 929 km long. Some trains leave from New Delhi station, some from Old Delhi (Delhi Junction), Hazrat Nizamuddin or Delhi Sarai Rohilla, so check which Delhi station your train uses.
In Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad Junction (Kalupur) is being redeveloped, and a number of long-distance trains were moved to terminate at Sabarmati station instead. Sabarmati is also in Ahmedabad, but it is a different station, so plan your onward travel accordingly.
Some direct trains
- Swarna Jayanti Rajdhani Express (12958 New Delhi to Sabarmati; 12957 in the other direction): the fastest regular train, with few stops (including Jaipur and Ajmer). It takes about 12 hours 25 minutes over 929 km.
- Ashram Express (12916 Delhi Junction to Sabarmati; 12915 in the other direction): a daily superfast train via Jaipur and Ajmer, taking about 14 hours 45 minutes. It has terminated at Sabarmati instead of Ahmedabad Junction since 1 February 2024.

Train numbers, terminals, days and timings change, sometimes at short notice. Check the train on the Indian Railways National Train Enquiry System (enquiry.indianrail.gov.in) or IRCTC before you book.
An earlier version of this article listed 15 trains between Delhi and Ahmedabad. Many of them run only on certain days, some do not start in Delhi, and several have since changed numbers or terminals. Rather than keep an out-of-date list, use the “trains between stations” search on NTES or IRCTC, which shows every current option for your date.
How to book train tickets
- Book on the IRCTC website or app (irctc.co.in), or at a railway reservation counter.
- Search between your Delhi station (or “all stations” in Delhi) and Ahmedabad (ADI) or Sabarmati (SBIB).
- Choose a class: the Rajdhani has only air-conditioned classes, while most express trains also have sleeper and general seats.
- Book early for holiday periods such as Diwali and Navratri, when Gujarat-bound trains fill up fast.
Delhi to Ahmedabad by flight
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport are linked by several non-stop flights a day, and the flight takes about an hour and a half. Full-service and low-cost airlines operate the route, and schedules change with each summer and winter season, so compare options on the airlines’ own websites or a booking site before you buy.
The flight list in an earlier version of this article is out of date. Jet Airways and its low-cost arm JetLite stopped flying in 2019, and Go First (formerly GoAir) stopped flying in May 2023. Flight numbers and timings from that list should not be used.
Delhi to Ahmedabad by bus
Private operators run overnight AC sleeper and semi-sleeper buses from several points in Delhi to Ahmedabad. The road route follows National Highway 48 through Rajasthan, and the journey usually takes a full night and more, so a train or flight is more comfortable for most travellers.
- Compare operators on booking platforms such as redBus, MakeMyTrip, Goibibo and ixigo, which show boarding points, timings and reviews.
- Check the operator’s recent ratings, the bus type (sleeper or seater) and the drop point in Ahmedabad before you pay.
- Prefer operators that share live bus tracking and a helpline number.
