How to Get an Airtel SIM with Aadhaar e-KYC or Digital KYC

Quick answer: You can get a new Airtel SIM, or a replacement SIM on your existing number, at an Airtel store or registered retailer. You can also order one through the Airtel Thanks app or the Airtel website and complete KYC (Know Your Customer) when it is delivered to your door. KYC is now fully digital. You either authenticate with Aadhaar e-KYC (fingerprint, iris or face) or show original ID and have a live photo taken. Airtel’s own guides list Aadhaar, voter ID, passport and driving licence among the accepted documents.

How Airtel SIM KYC works now

This article first described Airtel’s Aadhaar-based e-KYC scheme. That scheme activated new prepaid and postpaid connections by checking the customer’s fingerprint against Aadhaar records instead of collecting photocopies. Quick e-KYC activation is still available, but the rules around it have changed:

• Paper KYC has ended. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) stopped paper-based KYC for mobile connections on 1 January 2024. Airtel, like every operator, now uses Aadhaar e-KYC, digital KYC (D-KYC) with a live photo, or self-KYC online.
• Aadhaar was made voluntary in 2019. After the Supreme Court’s September 2018 judgment, the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Act, 2019 made Aadhaar a voluntary option for telecom KYC and stopped operators from storing a customer’s Aadhaar number or biometrics.
• New rules in 2026. The Telecommunications (User Identification) Rules, 2026, notified in August 2026, require biometric identification of mobile users. Published analyses of the Rules say Aadhaar holders are expected to use e-KYC, with D-KYC for people without Aadhaar. Our guide to SIM KYC rules explains the full timeline.

An earlier version of this article said that your iris and fingerprint data would be “collected and stored” at the store. Under the 2019 amendment, operators may not store your Aadhaar number or biometrics. The scan is used only to authenticate you with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

Documents to carry

Airtel’s buying guides list these as examples of accepted documents:

• Proof of identity: Aadhaar, voter ID card, passport or driving licence.
• Proof of address: Aadhaar, passport, voter ID card, driving licence or an electricity bill.

Take the originals. Under digital KYC the agent photographs your documents in Airtel’s app, so you should not need to hand over photocopies.

How to get a new Airtel SIM at a store

1. Visit an Airtel store or registered retailer with your original documents. Since 2023, every point of sale has to be registered and verified by the operator.
2. Choose your KYC method. For Aadhaar e-KYC, give your consent and scan your fingerprint, iris or face on the retailer’s device. UIDAI sends back your name, address and photo. For D-KYC, the agent photographs your ID and takes a live photo of you.
3. Check your details. Read the digital customer application form on the screen, including your declaration of how many connections you already hold, before you confirm.
4. Pick a plan and take the SIM. Airtel says KYC in a store takes about 30 to 40 minutes.
5. Complete verification and activation. Airtel’s activation guide says new customers dial 59059 and follow the automated verification call. Activation completes after verification and the first recharge.

How to order an Airtel SIM online

1. Open the Airtel Thanks app or the Airtel website and choose a new prepaid or postpaid connection.
2. Enter your details, pick a plan and book a time slot for delivery and KYC.
3. An Airtel executive brings the SIM and completes your KYC at your door. Keep your original documents ready.
4. Track the order in the Airtel Thanks app.

For postpaid connections, Airtel says an address verification visit is also required.

Replacing a lost or damaged Airtel SIM

1. Block the lost SIM first. Call Airtel customer care from another phone and ask for the SIM to be blocked. If the SIM was stolen or misused, report it to the police.
2. Visit an Airtel store with your original ID. For a damaged SIM, take the old SIM as well. For a lost or stolen SIM, Airtel’s consumer charter says a replacement is given after a complaint or FIR is submitted, so carry a copy.
3. Complete fresh KYC. A replacement SIM needs the same biometric or digital KYC as a new connection.
4. Activate the new SIM. Airtel’s guide says existing customers send an SMS to 121 in the format “SIM” followed by the 20-digit number printed on the new SIM, then confirm on the follow-up call. Airtel says this takes one to two days.

Two safety rules apply after any SIM replacement. Under DoT’s August 2023 reforms, SMS are barred for 24 hours on the new SIM. Under rules from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), you cannot get a porting code to move to another operator for seven days. Both rules exist to stop SIM-swap fraud.

Why use Aadhaar e-KYC for an Airtel SIM?

The original article listed faster activation and lower costs. These still hold:

• Your identity is checked electronically, so activation is quicker than the old paper process.
• No photocopies of your documents are left with a retailer.
• It is harder for someone else to take a SIM in your name.

An earlier version of this article quoted figures of 7 to 8 crore new connections a year and ₹145 to ₹175 of paperwork cost per connection. We could not verify these numbers, so we have removed them.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to link my Airtel number with Aadhaar?

No. The February 2018 deadline mentioned in the original article was overtaken by the Supreme Court’s September 2018 judgment, which struck down compulsory linking of Aadhaar with SIMs. Your number will not be cut off just because it is not linked to Aadhaar. Airtel may ask you to re-verify if DoT or a law enforcement agency flags the connection.

Can I get an Airtel SIM without Aadhaar?

People without Aadhaar can complete digital KYC with other original documents, such as a passport or voter ID, and a live photo. If you have Aadhaar, the 2026 Rules expect you to use Aadhaar e-KYC, so ask the store which options it can offer.

How many Airtel SIMs can I have?

The limit applies across all operators together, not to Airtel alone. You can hold up to nine mobile connections in your name, or six in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North-East. You can check the numbers in your name on DoT’s Sanchar Saathi portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in).

Does Airtel charge for KYC?

Airtel does not list a separate KYC fee. A SIM or a replacement SIM may carry a charge that varies by circle, so confirm it at the store or in the app before you pay.
