About this page
This page was first written around the film’s release in July 2016, with its dialogues, stills and the author’s box office predictions. We have kept it as a record of the film, checked the details again in October 2026, corrected the box office figures, and trimmed the dialogue list to a few short, widely quoted lines.
Sultan: key facts
- Director and writer: Ali Abbas Zafar
- Producer: Aditya Chopra (Yash Raj Films)
- Music: Vishal-Shekhar, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil
- Released: 6 July 2016 (Eid); released in China on 31 August 2018
- Cast: Salman Khan (Sultan Ali Khan), Anushka Sharma (Aarfa), Randeep Hooda (coach Fateh Singh), Amit Sadh (Aakash Oberoi) and Kumud Mishra (Aarfa’s father, Barkat Hussain)
Sultan tells the story of a middle-aged former wrestling champion from Rewari in Haryana whose success once drove a rift into his personal life. A promoter persuades him to return for a mixed martial arts league, partly to raise money for a blood bank, and with the help of coach Fateh Singh he trains again and fights his way back. Salman Khan speaks Haryanvi-flavoured Hindi in the film, which is why many of its lines use words like “manne” (me) and “hove hai” (is).
Famous Sultan dialogues
These are some of the most widely quoted lines, with a short English meaning for each. Spellings of Hindi lines vary from source to source.
Salman Khan as Sultan
- “Koi tumhe tab tak nahi hara sakta, jab tak tum khud se na haar jao.” (No one can defeat you until you lose to yourself.)

- “Jab zindagi tumhe patke, toh tum phir khade ho aur aisa daav maaro ki zindagi chit ho jaaye.” (When life throws you down, get up again and make a move that pins life down instead.)
- “Maine pehelwani zaroor chhodi hai, par ladna nahi bhoola.” (I may have given up wrestling, but I have not forgotten how to fight.)

- “Asli pehelwan ki pehchaan akhade mein nahi, zindagi mein hove hai.” (A real wrestler is known not in the ring but in life.)

- “Manne jis pehelwani ka guroor tha na, usi ne manne patka hai.” (The wrestling I was so proud of is what threw me down.)

Randeep Hooda as coach Fateh Singh
- “I don’t train dead people.”
Earlier versions of this page listed more of the film’s dialogue, including longer exchanges and Anushka Sharma’s introduction line. We now keep to a few short lines; the film is the place to hear the rest. For more of the actor’s lines, see our collection of Salman Khan’s best dialogues.

What this page predicted
Before release, this page predicted a first day above ₹33 crore and a weekend above ₹60 crore, and expected the film to cross ₹200 crore in India. It also noted that Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees, first planned for the same Eid, had been moved, so the two films would not clash. That part was right: Raees was postponed to avoid Sultan and released on 25 January 2017.
What Sultan actually earned
The original page later added “real” figures of ₹37.66 crore for the first day and ₹78.89 crore for the weekend. Bollywood Hungama’s records differ, so we have replaced them with its figures:
| Measure | Figure (Bollywood Hungama) |
|---|---|
| Opening day, India (nett) | ₹36.54 crore |
| Extended five-day opening weekend, India (nett) | ₹180.36 crore |
| End of week 1, India (nett) | ₹229.16 crore |
| India lifetime (nett) | ₹300.45 crore |
| India lifetime (gross) | ₹417.29 crore |
| Worldwide (gross) | ₹614.49 crore |
Because the film opened on a Wednesday for Eid, its first “weekend” ran for five days. Both predictions were comfortably beaten, and the film crossed the ₹300 crore mark in India that the original page mentioned. Later in 2016, Aamir Khan’s wrestling film Dangal overtook it; see our page on Dangal’s dialogues and box office.
