JEE Main and JEE Advanced: what you are preparing for
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) has two stages:
- JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It is used for admission to the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other centrally funded institutes, and it decides who can sit JEE Advanced. For 2026 it was held in two sessions, in January and April.
- JEE Advanced is the exam for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). It is organised each year by one of the IITs; IIT Roorkee organised JEE (Advanced) 2026.
Seats at IITs, NITs and other institutes are then allotted through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. An earlier version of this article called the whole process the “IIT Joint Entrance Exam”; most JEE Main candidates are in fact competing for NIT, IIIT and other seats, not only IIT seats.
JEE is very competitive, with lakhs of candidates every year, but it is a test of well-practised school-level Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The right materials, used consistently, matter more than the number of books you own.
1. Start with the official syllabus
Download the syllabus from the official JEE Main website (jeemain.nta.nic.in) before you buy anything. For the 2026 exam, NTA published the syllabus and the information bulletin in late October and early November 2025. Check the site for the bulletin for your exam year, because chapters can be added or dropped. Use the syllabus as a checklist: every book, video and test you use should map to it. JEE Advanced publishes its own syllabus on jeeadv.ac.in.
2. NCERT textbooks are the foundation
NCERT’s Class 11 and 12 books for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics cover most of the JEE syllabus, and they are free to read online on the NCERT website. They matter most for Chemistry, where many JEE Main questions on inorganic and organic topics follow NCERT closely. Read the chapter, solve the in-text and end-of-chapter questions, and only then move to harder material.
3. Previous years’ question papers
Solving past papers is one of the most productive things you can do. It shows you the pattern, the marking scheme, the level of difficulty and which topics come up again and again, and it tests your preparation honestly.
- JEE Main: the official website has a “Question Papers” section. When we checked in October 2026, it carried shift-wise B.Tech papers from the April 2026 session. NTA also publishes provisional and final answer keys after each session.
- JEE Advanced: the official website (jeeadv.ac.in) posts both papers with provisional and final answer keys after the exam.
Solve full papers in one sitting, check them against the official keys, and keep a notebook of every mistake and the concept behind it.
4. Mock tests
Both stages of JEE are computer-based tests, so practise on a computer under exam timing. The JEE (Advanced) website has offered online versions of its papers in the test interface, and the free government platform SATHEE, launched by the Ministry of Education with IIT Kanpur, offers practice tests and study videos for JEE and NEET. Regular mock tests build speed, accuracy and time management, and they show which chapters need another look.
5. Reference books by subject
Class textbooks alone may not be enough for the harder JEE questions. These standard books are widely used by aspirants; pick one or two per subject rather than all of them:

6. Online study tools and coaching
The internet makes subject-wise video lectures, notes, PDFs and preparation tips easy to find, and many educators offer online coaching for JEE. Online coaching can give structured study material and test series, and you can also find JEE exam details on coaching sites. Two cautions:
- Always confirm dates, eligibility, syllabus and fees on the official NTA and JEE Advanced websites, not on third-party pages.
- Choose one main source per subject and stick with it. Jumping between courses wastes time.
How to use your study materials well
- Finish the NCERT chapter and its exercises first.
- Move to one reference book for practice questions on the same chapter.
- Solve topic-wise past-year questions from the official papers.
- Take a full mock test every week or two, closer to the exam more often, and analyse every wrong answer.
- Keep short revision notes and a formula sheet, and revise them regularly.
