Quick answer: ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate is still sold in October 2026, and the current version is ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2027, released in September 2026. It is a Windows program that combines a fast photo organiser, a raw editor and a layered editor, and the 2027 version adds generative AI tools and automatic photo stacking. ACDSee’s store listed it at US$179.99 when we checked, and ACD Systems also sells a subscription called ACDSee 365 Cloud. Mac users need the separate, more limited Photo Studio for Mac.

ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2020

This review is based on ACD Systems’ product and store pages and published product information. We have not tested the software ourselves. An earlier version of this article reviewed Photo Studio Ultimate 2020, called it “more capable than most of the other software that we’ve reviewed” and quoted its 2020 prices. We have updated it for the 2027 version and removed the old prices and unsourced verdicts.

About ACDSee

ACDSee was first released in 1994 as an image viewer for Windows, and is made by ACD Systems International Inc., whose ACDSee Pro team has been based in Victoria, British Columbia. The original article described how ACD Systems moved from file management into image editing and then into the Photo Studio range, which positions ACDSee as an all-in-one alternative to Adobe Lightroom.

The Windows range in 2026 has three main editions: ACDSee Photo Studio Home, Professional and Ultimate. Ultimate is the top edition, with layered editing on top of the organiser and raw tools.

Pricing (as of October 2026)

  • Photo Studio Ultimate 2027: listed at US$179.99 on ACDSee’s online store in October 2026. The store did not make clear on that page whether this was a perpetual licence, so check the licence terms before you buy. ACDSee mentions a loyalty discount for upgrading from older versions, and offers a free trial.
  • ACDSee 365 Cloud: ACDSee’s subscription option. We could not see its plans or prices on ACDSee’s pages, so check its site directly.

The original article quoted $89.95 for a one-time purchase, a subscription from $89 a year for up to five users with 50 GB of cloud storage, and $99.99 for the Mac version. Those 2020 prices and terms are out of date.

What’s new in Photo Studio Ultimate 2027

ACDSee’s product page lists these new features in the 2027 version:

  • Generative AI tools: text-to-image, and AI-based editing, removal and fill.
  • Auto-Stack: groups photos by GPS location, capture time or image similarity, plus manual Custom Stacking.
  • AI search: AI reverse image search and grouping by image similarity.
  • Reject tag: for marking unwanted shots while culling.
  • AI Face Edit improvements: new controls for eyes, skin and lips.

Core features

The original review’s main points about ACDSee’s approach still describe the product:

  • Organising: ACDSee says you do not need to import photo collections first; it works with your folders. Ratings, keywords, categories and colour labels make them searchable, and AI face detection and recognition can find and name people.
  • Raw editing: non-destructive raw processing, with tools such as Light EQ, which the original article singled out, and colour and tone wheels.
  • Layered editing: layers with masks, blend modes, text and shapes.
  • Presets: AI Develop Presets that can be applied across a whole shoot.

The original article’s list of 2020 additions included face-recognition name suggestions, a Focus Stack tool, text layers, canvas resizing, rulers and guides, a Blended Clone tool, viewing PDF and Office documents, custom LUTs, OneDrive and Dropbox sync in the Folders pane and up to five Image Baskets. Most of these have been carried forward, but check the current feature list for any you rely on.

Its 2020 pros and cons were a full set of editing tools, responsive performance, geotagging and face recognition and good skin tools, against a crowded interface and weaker lens, chromatic aberration and noise correction than rivals. We have not re-tested these, so treat them as the 2020 view.

System requirements (Ultimate 2027)

  • Windows 10 (64-bit only) or Windows 11.
  • 64-bit Intel or AMD processor (Intel i5 or better recommended) and 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended).
  • A DirectX 12 graphics adapter with 2 GB of video memory (4 GB recommended) and 5 GB of free disk space.
  • An email address and internet connection for activation and online services.

The original article said it ran on Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 10; that is out of date.

ACDSee on a Mac

Photo Studio Ultimate is Windows-only. ACD Systems sells a separate Photo Studio for Mac. The original article noted that the Mac version lacked some Windows features, such as face recognition and LUT support at the time; compare the two feature lists before buying.

Who it suits

  • Good fit: Windows users who want one program for organising, raw editing and layered editing, without importing photos into a catalogue first.
  • Consider alternatives: if you work on a Mac, or want Adobe’s ecosystem. For professional tethered shooting, Capture One is a common choice, and our list of photo editing software compares more options, including Corel PaintShop Pro.
