What is Juhu Beach like?
Juhu is a long, wide beach facing west over the Arabian Sea, so it is a classic sunset spot. Mornings are quiet, with residents out walking, jogging and doing yoga. By evening the beach fills with families, friends and visitors, and the food stalls near the main entrance do brisk business.
Juhu is also an upmarket residential area, home to many film and television personalities, and the beach often appears in films, shoots and music videos. Hotels and restaurants line Juhu Tara Road behind the sand.
An earlier version of this article described Juhu as the longest beach in Mumbai and promised encounters with celebrities. We could not confirm the “longest” claim, and celebrity sightings are a matter of chance, so we have dropped both.
Things to do at Juhu Beach
- Watch the sunset. The beach faces the Arabian Sea, and evening is when Juhu is at its liveliest.
- Eat Mumbai street food. Stalls serve pav bhaji, bhel puri, pani puri, sev puri, corn, ice gola and kulfi, along with South Indian snacks and Indo-Chinese dishes. Choose busy stalls, prefer freshly cooked food, and drink sealed or filtered water.
- Take a morning walk. Early mornings are cool and calm, good for walking, running or simply watching the city wake up.
- Browse the stalls. Vendors sell toys, balloons and small souvenirs, especially in the evenings.
- See festivals by the sea. Juhu is one of the beaches where Ganesh idols are immersed at the end of Ganeshotsav, which draws huge crowds; expect road closures and heavy security on those days.
An earlier version of this article mentioned snake charmers and monkey trainers among the beach’s entertainers. Using snakes and monkeys for street performance is illegal in India under wildlife protection law, so we have removed this; please do not pay for such shows if you see them. Horse and camel rides were also mentioned; we could not confirm whether these are still offered or permitted.
Is it safe to swim at Juhu Beach?
Swimming is not advisable. Currents can be strong and the tide rises quickly. In June 2023, as Cyclone Biparjoy churned up the sea, four boys drowned after going into rough water off Juhu despite a lifeguard signalling them to stay out. During the monsoon the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) publishes high-tide dates each year and asks people to stay away from the shore at those times; in some past seasons entry to beaches has been restricted on high-tide and orange or red alert days. Lifeguards are deployed at Juhu, but their presence does not make the sea safe. Paddle only at the edge in calm weather, keep children close and leave the water when lifeguards or police tell you to.

Juhu is an open public beach and there is no entry fee. There are no official visiting hours. Early morning and evening are the most pleasant times; late at night the beach becomes quiet and poorly lit in parts, so stay in busy, lit areas. During monsoon high tides and severe weather alerts, the BMC or police may stop people from going on to the beach.
When to visit
November to March brings cooler, less humid weather and is the most comfortable season. Summer (April to May) is hot and humid, and the monsoon (roughly June to September) brings rough seas. For a quiet beach, go early in the morning; for the full Juhu atmosphere, go at sunset.

- Suburban rail: The nearest Western line stations are Vile Parle, Santacruz and Andheri. Take an auto-rickshaw or BEST bus to Juhu.
- Metro: D.N. Nagar, served by Metro Lines 1 and 2A, is the nearest metro station; continue by auto-rickshaw.
- By air: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is close by, particularly the domestic terminal (T1); allow extra time in traffic.
