Quick answer: Miramar Beach is Panaji’s city beach, about 3 km from the centre of Goa’s capital, where the Mandovi river meets the Arabian Sea. It is popular for evening walks, sunsets and views across the river mouth towards Fort Aguada, rather than for swimming. It is a free public beach, open from 7 am to sunset according to Goa Tourism; follow the lifeguards’ flags, and do not swim in the monsoon.

About Miramar Beach

Miramar is the beach neighbourhood of Panaji and one of the city’s two beaches; the other is neighbouring Caranzalem. The beach looks out over the point where the Mandovi river flows into the Arabian Sea, so you see river traffic, the open sea and, across the water, the headland of Aguada. A line of palm trees runs behind the sand.

The Portuguese originally called the area Porta de Gaspar Dias; it was later renamed Miramar, a name usually understood as “sea view”. Today it is a city beach used by residents for morning walks and jogging, and by visitors for sunset strolls. It occasionally hosts events, and in 2014 it was the venue for beach volleyball at the Lusofonia Games.

An earlier version of this article called Miramar the longest beach in Goa. That is not correct; it is a relatively small city beach, and much longer stretches of sand run along the Salcete coast in South Goa and the Bardez coast in North Goa.

Things to do at Miramar

  1. Walk at sunrise or sunset. The beach is at its best early in the morning and in the evening, when the light falls across the river mouth.
  2. Watch birds in winter. Gulls, plovers and other shorebirds are often seen on the sand and at the water’s edge in the cooler months.
  3. Take a boat trip. Boat trips, including dolphin-watching trips and river cruises, run from Panaji and the nearby coast in the season. Use operators registered with Goa’s Department of Tourism.
  4. Eat in Panaji. Cafés and restaurants line the roads near the beach, and the rest of the city, including the old Latin Quarter of Fontainhas, is a short ride away.

Water sports rules

Under Goa’s water sports policy, published in the Official Gazette in November 2020, every water sports operator, including those running dolphin trips, must be registered with the Department of Tourism. Activities may run only between 8 am and 6.30 pm or until sunset, whichever is earlier, and not at all in the monsoon or in unsafe weather. The Director of Tourism notifies the rates.

Evenings and nightlife

Miramar’s evenings centre on the sunset walk, followed by dinner or drinks at restaurants and bars in Miramar and the rest of Panaji. It is a city neighbourhood rather than a party beach; for clubs and beach parties, most visitors head to North Goa beaches such as Baga and Anjuna. Drinking on the open beach is prohibited, according to the Department of Tourism.

Is it safe to swim at Miramar?

Miramar is better for walking than swimming. Goa’s Department of Tourism advises visitors to swim only in zones marked by red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards keep watch, to stay out of the water where red flags fly, to avoid rip currents, and never to enter the sea after sunset or after drinking alcohol. It also says not to swim in the monsoon; in June 2026 Drishti Marine, the state’s lifesaving agency, said swimming in the sea and coastal water sports are prohibited during the monsoon season. Drinking alcohol and smoking on the beach itself are prohibited.

Best time to visit

November to March is the most pleasant season, with dry weather and the best chance of seeing winter birds. April and May are hot and humid. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings heavy rain and rough seas, when you should stay well back from the water. An earlier version of this article said winter temperatures “seldom cross 25 degrees Celsius”. We could not verify that figure, so it has been removed.

How to reach Miramar Beach

  • From Panaji: Miramar is about 3 km from the city centre, roughly 12 minutes by bus, taxi or auto-rickshaw. Two-wheelers can be hired in Panaji.
  • By rail: Karmali, on the Konkan Railway near Old Goa, is the closest station to Panaji; Madgaon (Margao) has more long-distance trains. Continue by taxi.
  • By air: Goa International Airport at Dabolim is about 30 minutes away by car. Manohar International Airport at Mopa, opened in January 2023, serves the north of the state and is further away.

An earlier version gave a bus fare and two-wheeler rental prices. These could not be verified and have been removed.

Places to visit near Miramar

  • Dona Paula: The rocky headland and viewpoint where the Mandovi and Zuari rivers meet the sea, a few kilometres along the coast; see our Dona Paula guide.
  • Fort Aguada: Visible across the river mouth, this Portuguese fort was completed in 1612 to guard against the Dutch, and its spring supplied passing ships with fresh water. It is on the far side of the Mandovi at Sinquerim, near Candolim Beach, so you need to drive round via the bridges at Panaji. An earlier version said the fort “initially worked as a jail” and gave opening hours. It was built as a fort; its jail was a later use, closing in 2015, and the old jail now houses a freedom struggle museum opened in 2021. The opening hours have been removed because we could not verify them.
  • Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary: A 178-hectare mangrove sanctuary on the western tip of Chorao island in the Mandovi, set up in 1988 and named after the ornithologist Salim Ali. Reach it by the ferry from Ribandar, east of Panaji.

An earlier version also listed Parra village and its watermelons and “St Lawrence’s Church” as places near Miramar. Parra is near Mapusa in North Goa, not close to Miramar, and we could not confirm which church was meant, so both have been removed. Named bars and cafés have also been removed because we could not confirm that each still operates.

Frequently asked questions

Is Miramar the longest beach in Goa?

No. It is a small city beach in Panaji. Earlier versions of this article made that claim in error.

How far is Miramar Beach from Panaji?

About 3 km from the city centre, roughly 12 minutes by road.

Can you swim at Miramar Beach?

Swimming is not the main reason to go. If you do go in, stay between the red-and-yellow flags where lifeguards are on duty, and never swim in the monsoon or after sunset.

Can you see Fort Aguada from Miramar?

Yes. The Aguada headland is visible across the mouth of the Mandovi, but reaching it means driving round via Panaji’s bridges.

What is the best time to visit Miramar Beach?

November to March, in the early morning or around sunset.

Details checked in October 2026 against Goa Department of Tourism beach guidance, the Goa water sports policy (Official Gazette, November 2020), Drishti Marine’s June 2026 monsoon advisory and published records of Miramar, Fort Aguada and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. Follow lifeguards’ instructions on the day.
