About Dudhsagar Falls
Dudhsagar means “sea of milk”, a name that comes from the white foam and spray the water forms as it plunges down the steep face of the hill. The falls drop in four tiers through thick forest, and at their foot the water collects in a green pool before flowing on west towards the Arabian Sea.
The falls are on the Mandovi, which is known in its upper reaches as the Mhadei (Mahadayi). The river rises at a cluster of springs at Bhimgad in the Western Ghats, in Belagavi district, Karnataka, and Dudhsagar lies where it tumbles down the Ghats at the Goa–Karnataka border. Dudhsagar is one of India’s tallest waterfalls and Goa’s tallest. Height figures vary slightly between sources: about 310 metres (just over 1,000 feet) is the most widely quoted, and the Goa Forest Department gives 306 metres. The falls lie inside Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, in Sanguem taluka. Since 31 December 2025 Sanguem has been part of Kushavati, a new third district carved out of South Goa.
The legend of Dudhsagar
A popular legend explains the name. A princess, the daughter of a king of the Ghats, would bathe in a lake near her father’s palace and afterwards drink a jug of milk from a golden pitcher with her maids. One day a young prince came through the forest and stopped to watch. To screen the princess while she dressed, her maids poured the milk down the hillside, creating a curtain of white. The falls, the story goes, still flow like that milk today. It is a legend, not history, but it is part of the falls’ appeal.
How to visit: the jeep trip from Collem
Most visitors reach Dudhsagar by jeep from Collem (also spelt Kulem), a village on the edge of the national park. The track runs about 10 km through forest and crosses streams before ending a short walk from the pool at the foot of the falls.
According to an October 2026 report citing the Forest Department’s order opening the Dudhsagar circuit for the 2026–27 season:
- only vehicles registered with the Goa Forest Department may carry visitors; private cars and two-wheelers are stopped at the entry gate;
- bookings are made through a government-authorised portal run by GTDC;
- entry gates are open from 8 am to 3 pm, with visitors sent in batches;
- trips are capped at 240 a day, as recommended by the State Board for Wildlife;
- life jackets are compulsory, and entering the falls without one is prohibited;
- plastic water bottles and carry bags are not allowed, and people found drunk or carrying alcohol face strict action;
- forest guards, nature guides and lifeguards are posted at the site.
Jeeps have long carried up to seven people; the Forest Department’s earlier rules limited each vehicle to seven adults. If you arrive alone or as a couple, you may have to wait until a jeep fills up, so booking ahead is sensible. Arrive at Collem early in the day: the gates close at 3 pm, and on busy days the daily cap can be reached sooner.
An earlier version of this article said there was no entry charge and that the falls were open from 9 am to 6 pm. Both were wrong for current visits: the sanctuary entry fee and the jeep fare both apply, and gate timings are set each season. Best time to visit
An earlier version called the monsoon “by far the best season” to visit. That advice is unsafe. The falls are at their fullest in the rains, but the river becomes dangerous, and the Forest Department closes Dudhsagar to visitors in the monsoon, roughly June to September. During the 2026 monsoon, the authorities also restricted visits to waterfalls, rivers and quarries in South Goa for safety.
The best time to go is just after the circuit reopens, usually in October, through December, when the falls are still in full flow and the weather is pleasant. The flow is lower in the dry months before the next monsoon. The opening date depends on the rains and is announced each year, so check before you plan.
Seeing Dudhsagar from the train
The railway line from Goa to Londa in Karnataka passes close to the falls, and passengers on trains along this line get a view, especially in and just after the monsoon. Dudhsagar has a small railway station, but Indian Railways has banned passengers from boarding or getting off there, and it is not a way into the falls.
Do not walk along the railway track. Walking on the line is trespassing, and it is dangerous on a busy mountain railway. The Forest Department does not allow entry to the falls from the railway track, and trekkers using it can face fines.
How to reach Collem
- By road from Panaji: Dudhsagar is about 60 km from Panaji by road. Drive or take a taxi east towards Mollem on the Panaji–Belagavi highway, then turn off to Collem. Kadamba (KTC) buses also run towards Mollem and Collem.
- By rail: Kulem (Collem) station, on the South Western Railway line from Vasco da Gama towards Londa, is the nearest station for the jeep stand. Madgaon (Margao) has more long-distance trains; Dudhsagar lies about 46 km east of Madgaon along the line.
- By air: Goa International Airport at Dabolim is the nearer airport. Manohar International Airport at Mopa is in the far north of Goa.
An earlier version gave exact distances from Panaji’s Kadamba bus stand and from the airport, and a journey time. We could not verify those figures, so they have been replaced with approximate distances from published records.
Tips for visiting
- Start early. A visit takes most of a day once you add the drive to Collem, the queue and the jeep ride.
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes with good grip. The last stretch from the jeeps to the pool is a walk over rough, rocky ground, and rocks near the water are slippery.
- Wear the life jacket if you go anywhere near the water, and follow the lifeguards. Currents below the falls can be strong.
- Carry snacks and take your rubbish back with you. Remember that plastic bottles and bags are not allowed on the trip.
