Quick answer: Scandal Point is the open square in central Shimla where the Mall meets the Ridge on its western side. It is the town’s favourite meeting place, with a statue of Lala Lajpat Rai, the General Post Office beside it and, on clear days, views of distant snow peaks. Its name comes from a popular legend that a Maharaja of Patiala eloped with a British official’s daughter from here, a story that does not fit the historical record. It is a public square, so there is no entry fee or timing.

What Scandal Point is like
Scandal Point is where Shimla’s two main promenades join: the Mall, lined with shops and colonial buildings, and the wide open Ridge above it. Himachal Pradesh Tourism describes it as the place where people meet to catch up on news and gossip, and on most evenings it is full of families, students and visitors.
A statue of the freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai stands on the square, and the General Post Office building is right beside it. On a clear day the square also gives views of distant snow-capped peaks, according to the Shimla district administration. Pony rides, snack stalls and photographers are common around the Ridge, especially in peak season.
Why is it called Scandal Point?
The popular story is a romance. In the usual version, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala fell in love with the daughter of a senior British official, often said to be the Viceroy or Lord Kitchener, and the couple eloped from this spot. Outraged, the British banned the Maharaja from Shimla, and in reply he built a new summer capital for his state at Chail, about 44 km away. The “scandal” gave the square its name.
The story is fun to tell, but the dates do not fit:
- Kitchener was never Viceroy. He was Commander-in-Chief of the Army in India from 1902 to 1909, and was turned down for the post of Viceroy in 1911.
- Bhupinder Singh was a baby when the palace was built. He was born on 12 October 1891. The palace at Chail was built over 1891–92 by his father, Maharaja Rajinder Singh, so it cannot have been a response to anything Bhupinder Singh did.
- No reliable record of the elopement exists. We found no historical source for an elopement from this spot, and accounts disagree on who the woman was.
An earlier version of this article gave the elopement as a fact, dated it to 1892 and described the British Viceroy as Lord Kitchener. As the article itself noted further down, Bhupinder Singh would have been about a year old then. What is true is that Chail later became the summer capital of Patiala state, and Bhupinder Singh completed the cricket ground there that his father had begun.
Whatever its origin, the name has stuck, and the legend is part of what draws visitors to the square.
How to reach Scandal Point
- On foot: From anywhere on the Mall or the Ridge, Scandal Point is a short walk.
- By the lift: HP Tourism runs a passenger lift from the Cart Road up to the Mall. From the top, walk along the Mall to Scandal Point. An earlier version of this article quoted a lift fare and hours that we could not confirm, so they have been removed; pay at the counter.
- By car or taxi: Vehicles are not allowed on the Mall and the Ridge. Park at a city car park, such as the lift parking or the Old Bus Stand, and walk up.
- By train: Shimla station on the Kalka–Shimla railway is below the town centre; take a taxi to the lift.
Best time to visit
Scandal Point is open all year. Spring and early summer (roughly March to June) usually bring clear skies and comfortable temperatures. The monsoon (about July to September) brings heavy rain and occasional landslides on the roads around Shimla. Winters are cold, with average January lows around 2°C according to India Meteorological Department records, and the town gets snow in some years, mostly in January and February. If you visit in winter, dress warmly; the square looks beautiful under snow.
