What Green Valley is like
On the drive from Shimla towards Kufri, the highway runs along a hillside above a deep, forested valley. Tall deodar (Himalayan cedar) and pine trees cover the slopes below, and on a clear day you look across layer after layer of green ridges. The name simply describes the view. In winter, when snow falls on this stretch, the same slopes turn white.
This is mainly a place to stop, stretch your legs and take photographs. Vendors set up stalls along the road in the tourist season, selling tea and snacks. The forests on this side of Shimla have long been protected; the Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary nearby was first protected in British times to supply the town’s water. Read more in our guide to the Reserve Forest Sanctuary, Shimla.
An earlier version of this article said yaks graze in the valley and that rare wildlife is often seen here. We could not verify either claim, so they have been removed.
Best time to visit
- July to October: the monsoon and the weeks after it are when the forest is at its greenest. Himachal Pradesh Tourism treats July to September as Shimla’s rainy season; expect mist, heavy showers and occasional landslides, so check road conditions before you drive.
- March to June: clear, pleasant days and the busiest tourist traffic on the Kufri road.
- December to February: cold, with snow in some years (India Meteorological Department records show most of Shimla’s snow falls in January and February). Roads can be slippery or briefly closed after heavy snow.
An earlier version of this article gave two conflicting “best months” (July to October and February to April in one place, October to May in another). The guide above replaces both.
How to reach Green Valley
- By road from Shimla: Green Valley is on the main highway to Kufri, so any taxi or bus going to Kufri passes it. The Shimla district administration says Himachal Road Transport Corporation buses to Kufri leave from the Lakkar Bazaar bus stand, and taxis can be hired from the Old Bus Stand or the Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT).
- Stopping: The viewpoint is on a busy highway. Ask your driver to stop only where it is safe to pull off the road, and take care when crossing.
- Getting to Shimla: Shimla is connected by road with Delhi and Chandigarh, by the Kalka–Shimla railway, and by flights from Delhi to Jubbarhatti airport, about 23 km from the city, according to Himachal Pradesh Tourism.
Tips for visiting
- If you are not used to mountain roads, hire an experienced local driver.
- Carry a warm layer; it gets cold quickly once the sun goes down, even in summer.
- Do not leave litter. The slopes below are forest land.
- Do not try to climb down the steep slopes from the road.
