Quick answer: The Philippines’ best beaches include El Nido in Palawan, Boracay’s White Beach, Panglao in Bohol, Siargao for surfing, the pink sand of Great Santa Cruz Island in Zamboanga, the islands of Caramoan, and quieter spots such as Palaui, Bantayan, Pagudpud, Samal, Bakhaw Beach in the Camotes Islands and Antonia Beach in the Gigantes Islands. The dry season, roughly December to May, is the most reliable time for island-hopping. Several of these places have protected-area rules or fees, so check them before you go.

Best Beaches In Philippines

Before you go

  • Weather: the Philippines has a wetter season around the middle and later part of the year, when typhoons are possible, and a drier season roughly from December to May. Boat trips are often cancelled in rough weather.
  • Protected areas: many of the best beaches are inside protected landscapes and seascapes or national parks, with visitor registration, environmental fees and rules against taking sand, shells or coral.
  • Visas: check current entry rules for Indian passport holders with the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi before you book.

12 best beaches in the Philippines

1. El Nido, Palawan

El Nido, a coastal town in northern Palawan, is the gateway to one of the most beautiful seascapes in the country. Island-hopping boats visit fine-sand beaches, hidden lagoons and caves among dramatic limestone karst cliffs. It is best for snorkelling, swimming and kayaking in the lagoons. Island-hopping tours follow set routes, and an environmental fee is charged; ask your tour operator what is included.

An earlier version of this article said whale sharks are among the marine life you can see at El Nido. Sightings there are not something to plan around, so we have removed the claim.

2. Boracay, Aklan

Boracay is the country’s most famous beach island, in Malay municipality, Aklan province. Its White Beach is about 4 km of fine white sand lined with resorts, restaurants and bars, and the island comes alive at night. On the east side, Bulabog Beach is the main area for kiteboarding and windsurfing.

The government closed Boracay to tourists for six months from 26 April 2018 because of serious environmental and sewage problems, and it reopened on 26 October 2018. After the rehabilitation, beach vendors, masseuses and bonfires were removed from the beach and businesses were set back from the waterline. An earlier version of this article described the clean-up as “ongoing”; it was completed in 2018. Check the Department of Tourism’s current requirements for visitors before you book.

3. Palaui Island, Cagayan

Palaui Island, off the north-eastern tip of Luzon in Santa Ana, Cagayan, is a protected landscape and seascape that was redesignated as a national park in 2018. CNN once included it among the world’s 100 best beaches for its raw beauty. Its main attractions include the Cape EngaƱo Lighthouse on the island’s northern point, coral reefs and undeveloped beaches. Two seasons of the US version of Survivor were filmed here in 2013.

Boats go from the port of San Vicente on the mainland. Facilities are basic, so it suits camping, trekking and snorkelling rather than resort holidays.

4. Panglao, Bohol

Panglao Island, linked to the main island of Bohol, has some of the best-known beaches in the Visayas and is a base for diving, snorkelling and dolphin-watching boat trips. Bohol is also home to the Philippine tarsier, one of the world’s smallest primates, and the Chocolate Hills, so it is easy to combine beach days with sightseeing on the main island.

5. Bantayan Island, Cebu

Bantayan Island, off the northern tip of Cebu, is known for white sand, clear blue water and colourful sunsets. It is quieter and more laid-back than Cebu’s busier resort areas, with beachside eateries and a relaxed, local evening scene.

6. Caramoan, Camarines Sur

Caramoan is a municipality on a peninsula in Camarines Sur, in the Bicol region, with ten main islands offshore and many small islets, such as Matukad. The area has white and pink sand beaches, calm lagoons, caves and limestone cliffs. According to local history, the Spanish first called the place “Carahan” after the sea turtles once common on its shores.

Caramoan is famous as a filming location for many international editions of the reality show Survivor, including two US seasons and India’s only season of Survivor India.

7. Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Island Garden City of Samal lies about 2 km off Davao City, across the Davao Gulf. Its shores have many beach resorts and calm water, and nearby Talikud Island is popular for its reefs. Ferries and boats run from the Sasa and Santa Ana wharves in Davao City, and a bridge to the island has been proposed for completion around 2027.

An earlier version of this article described a “118-kilometre shoreline” and a sandbar that disappears at high tide. We could not confirm these details and have removed them.

8. Siargao, Surigao del Norte

Siargao is known as the surfing capital of the Philippines. Its most famous break, Cloud 9 near General Luna, is a right-hand reef wave known for thick, hollow tubes and hosts the annual Siargao Cup surfing competition. Surf is usually strongest from about August to December. Non-surfers can enjoy calm lagoons, island-hopping and swimming. The island was hit hard by Super Typhoon Rai (Odette) in December 2021.

9. Great Santa Cruz Island, Zamboanga City

Great Santa Cruz Island, about 4 km south of downtown Zamboanga City in the Basilan Strait, is famous for its pink sand, which gets its colour from crushed red organ-pipe coral mixed with white sand. It is part of the Great and Little Santa Cruz Islands Protected Landscape and Seascape, declared in 2000.

Trips are arranged through the tourism office at Paseo del Mar in Zamboanga City. Visitors attend a short briefing, and boats take about 15 minutes each way. Taking sand, shells or coral is prohibited, and single-use plastics and PET bottles are not allowed. Check your government’s travel advisory for the Zamboanga area before you plan a visit.

10. Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Pagudpud, at the northern tip of Luzon, is a quiet beach town with long stretches of white sand and turquoise water, and far less commercial development than the islands further south. The wind turbines of the nearby Bangui wind farm are a well-known sight on the way. Getting there takes time, by road from Laoag, which has the nearest airport. Surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding are possible when the wind and waves are right.

11. Bakhaw Beach, Camotes Islands, Cebu

Bakhaw Beach in the Camotes Islands is one of Cebu province’s less-visited beaches. Although it is a public beach, it is rarely crowded, and its white sand and clear water make it a good place to swim, sunbathe and watch the sunset. The dry months, roughly December to May, are the best time to go, and in January you can combine a trip with the Sinulog festival in Cebu City.

12. Antonia Beach, Gigantes Islands, Iloilo

The Islas de Gigantes (Gigantes Islands), off northern Iloilo in the Western Visayas, have become a popular island-hopping destination. Antonia Beach has clear water and fine white sand, and is far quieter than the country’s best-known beaches. Just offshore you can see fish, corals and seagrass even without snorkelling gear, though renting gear gives you a better look. Boat trips are most comfortable in the drier months, roughly December to May, when the sea is calmer. In January you can also catch the Dinagyang festival in Iloilo City.
