Ticket prices: what has changed
An earlier version of this article gave two sets of prices: ₹350 for visitors 3 feet tall and above and ₹250 for children under 3 feet, and higher prices of ₹400 and ₹300 during the park’s 2019 summer carnival (6 April to 9 June 2019). It also listed dry-ride charges of ₹30 to ₹50 each. These figures are several years old, and the park’s website no longer lists prices, so we have not repeated them as current. Those older prices were based on the visitor’s height, with separate charges for dry rides; confirm the current rates directly with the park.
About Jalavihar
Jalavihar was inaugurated on 20 May 2007 and covers about 12.5 acres on the lakefront. It was developed as a public-private partnership with the state tourism department. The park describes itself as a “family entertainment park” with wet and dry rides, and it says it has won first prize from the Department of Horticulture every year since 2007 for its landscaping.
Besides the water park, Jalavihar runs banquet halls and event spaces, with open lawns used for weddings, birthday parties, school events and corporate gatherings. An earlier version of this article said its lawns can hold about 2,000 people, which matches published descriptions of the park’s party zone.
Rides and attractions
Water rides and pools
- Wave pool: a large pool with artificial waves, with shallow areas for small children and deeper areas for stronger swimmers.
- Ladies’ and kids’ pool: an aquatic play area with about eleven interactive features, including a giant tilt bucket and a mushroom umbrella.
- Pendulum ride: a U-shaped slide where riders glide up and down before coming to a stop.
- Tube rides: raft rides for three to four people through looping slides.
- Twister and Crazy Ride: fast, twisting body slides that end in a splash pool.
- Multi Line racer: a three-lane slide where riders race each other.
- DJ Rain Dance: a dance floor with water sprays and music.
Dry rides and games
The park lists dry rides including a Frog Hopper, Kiddie Train, Bull Ride, Trampoline, Bungee Jump, Bumper Cars and Net Cricket. Dry rides usually carry an extra charge on top of the entry ticket.
An earlier version of this article named rides such as a “Scary House”, “Fun Palace”, “Super-Jet” and “mini rainbow wheel”. These do not appear on the park’s current ride list, so check at the park if you are looking for a particular ride.
How to reach Jalavihar
- By MMTS train: Necklace Road station on Hyderabad’s suburban MMTS network is the closest rail stop.
- By bus, auto or cab: city buses run along the roads around Hussain Sagar, and auto-rickshaws and app cabs will drop you at the gate on Necklace Road.
An earlier version of this article swapped the bus and train directions (it described a “railway station” under “By bus” and a “bus stop” under “By train”), and its distances could not be verified, so they have been corrected and removed.
Tips for visiting
- Swimwear: carry suitable swimwear and ask the park about its dress code for the rides and pools before you go.
- Food: the park has food courts. An earlier version of this article said outside food and drink are not allowed; check the current rule with the park.
- Season: the park is busiest in the summer holidays (April and May) and at weekends. Weekday mornings are quieter.
- Children: keep an eye on small children in the wave pool at all times, and follow the lifeguards’ instructions.
- Accessibility: published listings describe the park as wheelchair accessible, but check what is available for the rides you want.
Hussain Sagar and places nearby
Jalavihar overlooks Hussain Sagar, the large lake that separates Hyderabad from Secunderabad. The lake was built in 1562 during the reign of the Golconda sultan Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah and is named after Hussain Shah Wali. An 18-metre monolithic statue of the Buddha has stood on the Gibraltar Rock in the middle of the lake since 1992. (An earlier version of this article said the lake was built by “Ibrahim Qutb Shah Wali”; the ruler was Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, and Hussain Shah Wali was the man it is named after.)
Other places close to Jalavihar include:
- Sanjeevaiah Park: a large park next door, on the north side of the lake.
- Lumbini Park and NTR Gardens: lakeside parks a short drive away.
- Birla Mandir: the white-marble temple on Naubat Pahad overlooking the lake. See our Birla Mandir guide.
For bigger days out, compare Jalavihar with Wonderla Hyderabad, a much larger amusement and water park on the Outer Ring Road, or Ramoji Film City. An earlier version of this article listed the Salar Jung Museum and the Nizam’s Museum as the “closest attractions”; both are in the Old City, a drive away.
