Correction: an earlier version of this article gave Summer Hill’s height as “around 2,100 feet”. The correct figure is about 2,130 metres, or roughly 6,980 feet. It also suggested arriving “between 5 am and 10 pm” as if Summer Hill had opening hours; it is an open residential area, so we have removed this.
About Summer Hill
Shimla is traditionally described as being built on seven hills: Jakhu, Elysium, Bantony, Prospect, Inverarm, Observatory and Summer Hill. Summer Hill is the lowest of them. Its slopes are covered with oak, deodar (Himalayan cedar) and pine forest, with old houses scattered among the trees, and it is much quieter than the Mall and the Ridge. The area is also known as Potter’s Hill.
The top of the hill is occupied by the campus of Himachal Pradesh University, which mainly offers postgraduate programmes.
Gandhi at Manorville
Manorville is the Georgian-style mansion of Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Mahatma Gandhi’s close associate and, after Independence, India’s first Health Minister. It was her summer retreat, and according to the Gandhi Heritage Portal, Gandhi stayed there for a total of 67 days between 1939 and 1945, starting in September 1939. His longest stay, 23 days, was in 1945 during the Simla Conference at the nearby Viceregal Lodge. After Independence, Amrit Kaur gifted the house to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Manorville is not a regular ticketed attraction, and we found no official visiting hours. If you want to see the house, ask locally whether any part of it is open, and treat it as private property.
Amrita Sher-Gil’s family home
Among Summer Hill’s old houses was a residence of the family of the painter Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941). An earlier version of this article said the area is famous for “hosting” her paintings; we found no evidence that her works are displayed at Summer Hill today, so that claim has been removed.
Things to do
- Walk through the forest: the shaded roads and paths through oak, pine and deodar are the main draw.
- Visit Chadwick Falls: a short walk from Summer Hill, best seen in the rainy season (about July to September), according to Himachal Pradesh Tourism.
- Explore the Glen: part of this forest lies directly below Summer Hill.
- Watch the toy train: trains on the UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla line stop at Summer Hill station.
- Photography: mornings and late afternoons give the best light over the forested slopes.
Best time to visit
Summer Hill can be visited all year. March to June and October to November bring the most pleasant walking weather. The rainy season, roughly July to September, is the time for Chadwick Falls but brings slippery paths. Winters are cold: India Meteorological Department normals give Shimla an average January low of about 2°C, nights can drop below freezing, and snow falls in some years, mostly in January and February.
How to reach Summer Hill

- By bus: local buses on Shimla’s ring road serve Summer Hill, according to the Shimla district administration.
- By taxi: taxis run to Summer Hill from central Shimla; government taxis operate from Summer Hill itself.
- On foot: from the Mall, it is a long but pleasant walk of about 5 km via Chaura Maidan and Boileauganj.
Tips for visiting
