What is Varca Beach like?
Varca is part of the long sandy coastline of Salcete that runs south from Majorda and Colva through Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim towards the mouth of the Sal river. The beach is wide and clean, with soft white sand, and it feels far less crowded than the North Goa beaches. Wooden fishing boats, owned by the village’s Christian fishing families, are pulled up on the sand, and behind the beach are coconut palms and village lanes.
That combination makes Varca a good choice for a peaceful beach day, a long walk or a family holiday. Several large resorts are spread along this part of the coast, together with smaller guesthouses and, in season, beach shacks serving Goan seafood such as fish curry and recheado fry.
The village church, the Church of Our Lady of Gloria, is one of the oldest buildings in Varca and is still in use for services.
An earlier version of this article described Varca as a “12 km stretch” of beach. We could not confirm that figure, so it has been removed. Varca is one section of a much longer stretch of sand shared by several villages.
Things to do at Varca Beach
- Relax and walk. The beach is long and flat, ideal for morning and sunset walks.
- Go dolphin watching. Boat trips to see dolphins run in season from this coast, including from neighbouring Cavelossim near the mouth of the Sal river. The dolphins usually seen off Goa are Indian Ocean humpback dolphins, a protected species. (An earlier version said “Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins on the river Sal”; the trips go out to sea, and humpback dolphins are the species usually seen.) Choose an operator that keeps its distance and does not chase the animals.
- Try water sports. Jet skis, banana rides, water skiing and windsurfing are offered in the season. Use only operators registered with the Department of Tourism.
- Eat Goan seafood. Shacks and resort restaurants serve local dishes; prefer busy places with freshly cooked food.
Water sports rules
Goa’s water sports policy, published in the Official Gazette in November 2020, says operators must be registered with the Department of Tourism, activities may run only from 8 am to 6.30 pm or until sunset, whichever is earlier, and nothing may run in the monsoon or in unsafe weather. The Director of Tourism notifies the rates, so ask for the official price and a receipt.
Is it safe to swim at Varca?
Swim only where lifeguards are on duty, in the zones marked with red-and-yellow flags, and stay out of the water wherever red flags fly. Goa’s Department of Tourism also tells visitors not to enter the sea after sunset or after drinking any alcohol, and not to swim in the monsoon. In June 2026 Drishti Marine, the state’s lifesaving agency, said swimming in the sea and coastal water sports are prohibited during the monsoon season. Keep children close at all times.
Nightlife at Varca
Varca’s evenings are quiet. Most of the nightlife is in resort bars and restaurants, with live music or theme nights in season, plus dinner at beach shacks. An earlier version of this article listed named bars, restaurants and resorts; we have removed them because we could not confirm that each one still operates under the same name. Remember that drinking alcohol and smoking on the open beach are prohibited, according to the Department of Tourism.
Best time to visit
- November to March: cool, dry and pleasant; the main season for shacks and water sports.
- April and May: hot and humid.
- Monsoon (roughly June to September): heavy rain and rough seas; no swimming and no water sports.
How to reach Varca Beach
