About Colva Beach
Colva is a coastal village in Salcete taluka, South Goa. Its beach is usually described as about 2.5 km long, but it is really one part of a much longer belt of sand that runs down the Salcete coast, from Majorda in the north through Colva, Benaulim and Varca to Cavelossim and Mobor in the south. That means you can walk for a long way in either direction.
Colva was under Portuguese rule from 1510 until 1961, and you can still see old Portuguese-style houses in the village. The beach itself is one of the most developed in South Goa, with shacks, restaurants, guesthouses, shops and ATMs close by, which makes it convenient for families. Fishermen still bring in their boats and sometimes dry their catch on the sand.
An earlier version of this article said that wealthy British and Portuguese families had used Colva as a retreat since the 1600s. We could not confirm the British part of that claim, so it has been removed. It also gave the beach’s length as 2.4 km; sources give about 2.5 km, and the exact figure depends on where the neighbouring beaches are said to begin.
Our Lady of Mercy Church and the Fama of Menino Jesus
The Church of Our Lady of Mercy (Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Mercês) is Colva’s best-known landmark. It was founded in 1630 and rebuilt in the 18th century in the village square. The church holds a statue of the Menino Jesus (the Infant Jesus), which many devotees believe has healing powers. The statue is brought out for public veneration during the annual feast known as the Fama, held in October, when large numbers of pilgrims visit Colva. If you visit during the feast, expect crowds and traffic, and dress modestly inside the church.
Things to do at Colva
- Watch the sunset. The beach faces west, and evenings are the liveliest time.
- Eat at a beach shack. Shacks serve Goan seafood, Indian and continental dishes in season. Shacks on Goa’s beaches are temporary seasonal structures licensed by the Department of Tourism, and the line-up changes from season to season.
- Try water sports. Parasailing, jet skis, banana rides and boat trips, including dolphin trips, are offered in the season. Stay between the black-and-white chequered flags that mark the water sports zone, and use registered operators.
- Shop in the stalls. Stalls near the beach sell beachwear, cashew nuts, spices and souvenirs. Bargain politely.
- Visit Goa Chitra. This private museum of rural Goan life in neighbouring Benaulim, opened in 2009 by artist and restorer Victor Hugo Gomes, displays roughly 4,000 objects, from farm tools to pottery.
Water sports rules
Under Goa’s water sports policy, published in the Official Gazette in November 2020, operators must be registered with the Department of Tourism and may work only from 8 am to 6.30 pm or until sunset, whichever is earlier. No water sports are allowed in the monsoon or in unsafe weather, and rates are notified by the Director of Tourism.
Is it safe to swim at Colva?
Colva has lifeguards, and swimming areas are marked with coloured flags. Goa’s Department of Tourism advises swimming only in the zones marked by red-and-yellow flags, staying out of the water wherever red flags fly, and never swimming after sunset or after drinking alcohol. Its advice also says not to swim in the monsoon; in June 2026 Drishti Marine, the state’s lifesaving agency, said swimming in the sea and coastal water sports are prohibited during the monsoon season. Rip currents can pull swimmers out to sea, so ask the lifeguard on duty before going in.
Nightlife at Colva
Colva’s nightlife is relaxed: shacks and bars with music, seafood dinners and sunset drinks in season, rather than big clubs. An earlier version of this article named several clubs, bars, shacks, restaurants and hotels. We have removed them because we could not confirm that each one still operates. Drinking alcohol on the open beach is prohibited, according to the Department of Tourism; drink at licensed shacks and restaurants instead.
Best time to visit
November to March brings pleasant, dry weather and the full range of shacks and water sports, and Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks. April and May are hot and humid. The monsoon, roughly June to September, brings heavy rain and rough seas; the beach is quieter, but swimming and water sports stop.
How to reach Colva Beach
- By rail: Madgaon (Margao) on the Konkan Railway is about 8 km away; take a taxi, auto-rickshaw or local bus.
- By air: Goa International Airport at Dabolim is the nearer airport. Manohar International Airport at Mopa, opened in January 2023, is in the far north of the state.
- From Panaji: Drive south via Margao; allow extra time in peak season.
What to carry and tips

- Keep valuables in your hotel safe and do not leave bags unattended on the sand.
