Quick answer: Utorda is a quiet beach on the Salcete coast of South Goa, with Majorda to the south and Arossim to the north, on the long belt of sand that runs down to Colva and beyond. People come for the uncrowded, palm-backed sand, a few shacks and the beach resorts set behind it, with Majorda’s church, the Three Kings feast at Cuelim and the Naval Aviation Museum at Bogmalo within reach. What is Utorda Beach like?

Utorda is one of the less-visited beaches of South Goa. It is part of the Majorda–Utorda–Calata area of Salcete, north-west of Margao (Madgaon), and its sand runs on without a break into Majorda to the south and Arossim to the north, so long beach walks are easy. Palm trees line the back of the beach, and the atmosphere is calm and unhurried, which is why people looking for a restful holiday choose it over Goa’s busier beaches.

Several beach resorts and spas are set back from the sand along this stretch, alongside smaller guesthouses. The original version of this article called Utorda “the Golden Beach of Goa” and one of the cleanest beaches in the area. We could not find an official source for either description, so treat them as the impression of earlier visitors rather than a formal title.

Things to do at Utorda

  • Relax and walk. The main draw is a quiet day on the sand, with long walks towards Majorda or Arossim.
  • Watch the sunset. The beach faces west over the Arabian Sea.
  • Eat at a shack. A few seasonal shacks serve seafood, Goan and Indian dishes and drinks, with loungers by the sea. Drinking alcohol on the open beach itself is prohibited, according to Goa’s Department of Tourism.
  • Take a boat trip. Dolphin-watching and fishing trips run from parts of this coast. The dolphins usually seen off Goa are Indian Ocean humpback dolphins, a protected species, so choose an operator that keeps its distance.
  • Go cycling. The quiet village roads between Utorda, Majorda and Cansaulim suit gentle rides.
  • Shop for small things. Local stalls sell beachwear, trinkets and handicrafts in the season.

A note on water sports

An earlier version of this article described water skiing and windsurfing at Utorda, and an annual windsurfing championship in Goa. We could not confirm that these are currently offered at Utorda or that the championship still takes place, so treat them as possibilities to ask about locally. Under Goa’s water sports policy (Official Gazette, November 2020), every water sports operator, including dolphin and fishing trips, must be registered with the Department of Tourism and work within demarcated zones. Water sports may run only from 8 am to 6.30 pm or until sunset, whichever is earlier, and none may run in the monsoon or in rough weather. For a wider choice of water sports, the busier North Goa beaches such as Calangute are better bets.

Is it safe to swim at Utorda?

Ask the lifeguards before going in. Goa’s Department of Tourism advises visitors to swim only in zones watched by lifeguards and marked by red-and-yellow flags, to stay out wherever red flags fly, to watch out for rip currents, and not to enter the water after sunset, after drinking or in the monsoon. In June 2026 Drishti Marine, the state’s lifesaving agency, said swimming in the sea and coastal water sports are prohibited during the monsoon season. If no lifeguard is on duty at your part of the beach, stay in the shallows.

Places to visit near Utorda

Majorda Beach and the Mãe de Deus Church

Majorda, immediately south of Utorda, is a village in Salcete known for its beaches. Its sand is part of the same long South Goa stretch, lined with shacks in the season. The village’s parish church is the Mãe de Deus (Mother of God) Church.

Three Kings Chapel, Cuelim (Cansaulim)

On a hill at Cuelim, in Cansaulim just north of Arossim, stands the chapel of Our Lady of Remedios, popularly known as the Three Kings Chapel. Franciscan friars built an oratory on the hilltop around the end of the 16th or start of the 17th century. Every year on 6 January, the Feast of the Epiphany, three boys from the wards of Arossim, Cansaulim and Cuelim are chosen as the three kings and ride to the chapel on horseback for the feast mass, one of the best-known Three Kings celebrations in Goa. The climb is rewarded with wide views over the countryside and the sea. An earlier version called it the “Spooky Church” because of a legend about three Portuguese kings; that is folklore, and the chapel is an active place of worship, so visit respectfully.

The Indian Navy’s Naval Aviation Museum is at Bogmalo, about 6 km from Vasco da Gama, a short drive north of Utorda. Founded on 12 October 1998, it has an outdoor park of retired naval aircraft, including the Sea Harrier, Breguet Alizé, Hawker Sea Hawk and Lockheed Super Constellation, and a two-storey indoor gallery on naval aviation, armament and uniforms, with large models of the aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Viraat. An earlier version described it as one of only two military aviation museums in India; we could not verify that claim, so it has been removed. Check opening days and hours before you go.

Other beaches on the Salcete coast

South of Majorda the sand continues past Betalbatim to Colva, South Goa’s busiest beach, then Benaulim, Varca and Cavelossim. To compare them all, see our guide to the best beaches in Goa.

An earlier version also recommended a paintball park, two named shacks and three named restaurants. We have removed those names because we could not confirm that each one still operates.

Best time to visit

  • November to March: the peak season, with cooler weather, calmer seas and shacks open.
  • April and May: hotter, with fewer visitors; some places start to close.
  • Monsoon (roughly June to September): heavy rain and rough seas; swimming and water sports stop, and many seasonal businesses in South Goa shut until the season reopens.

Visitors who come in the off-season usually want peace and solitude. If you prefer a livelier beach scene, come in the peak season.

How to reach Utorda Beach

  • By air: Goa International Airport at Dabolim, near Vasco da Gama, is the closer airport, a short drive away. Manohar International Airport at Mopa, opened in January 2023, is in the far north of the state.
  • By rail: Majorda has a railway station; Madgaon (Margao), a short drive inland, has far more long-distance trains. Continue by taxi.
  • From Panaji: Arossim, Utorda’s northern neighbour, is about 27.5 km from Panaji. A taxi or your own vehicle is the quickest way; Kadamba (KTC) buses are cheaper but slower, usually with a change at Margao.

Shacks and services change every season, so confirm locally.
