Aksa Beach Mumbai: Timings, Entry, Swimming Safety and How to Reach

What is Aksa Beach like?

Aksa is a wide, sandy beach with rocks at its edges and a mix of sea, scrub and small hills behind it. It is less crowded than Juhu on weekdays, which makes it a pleasant place for a walk and a sunset. On weekends it gets busy: around 15,000 people have been estimated to visit on a weekend day. Many private cottages and small hotels in the area rent to visitors.

The beach sits on what was once Madh Island, which 20th-century land reclamation joined to Malad. The area has four main villages and beaches, Marve, Aksa, Erangal and Madh, so Aksa is easy to combine with its neighbours. INS Hamla, an Indian Navy base, is at one end of the beach, and the small beach of Dana Pani lies at the other. Large parts of the area are occupied by the Navy and the Indian Air Force, so respect any restricted zones.

Aksa also has a small place in Bollywood: the 2008 film God Tussi Great Ho has a song called “Tujhe Aksa Beach Ghuma Doon”.

Is it safe to swim at Aksa Beach?

No. Swimming at Aksa is unsafe and prohibited. Two tidal currents meet over rocky ground here, the sand shifts underfoot, there are patches of quicksand in the water, and the tide changes quickly. Warning signs are posted and lifeguards are assigned, but accidents keep happening, usually when visitors ignore the warnings. A 2022 study found that dozens of people drowned at Aksa between 2006 and 2018, with the most incidents during the pre-monsoon summer holidays, when crowds are largest.

• Do not go into the sea, even to wade, at high tide or in rough weather.
• Keep children within arm’s reach near the water.
• Follow instructions from lifeguards and police. During the monsoon the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issues high-tide advisories and asks people to stay away from beaches at those times.

Aksa Beach timings and entry fee

Aksa is an open public beach and there is no entry fee. No official visiting hours are published. An earlier version of this article listed set hours of 6 am to 7:30 pm for every day of the week; those were not official timings, so we have removed them. The beach does become dark and deserted after sunset, so plan to leave by then.

Snack stalls along the beach sell things like vada pav, corn, coconut water and cold drinks. An earlier version of this article quoted a rental price for mats; prices change, so we no longer list them.

How to reach Aksa Beach

1. By train: Take a Western line suburban train to Malad station.
2. From Malad (West): BEST buses run from Malad station towards Madh, Marve and Aksa, or you can take an auto-rickshaw or an app cab. The road journey takes time in traffic, so allow for it.
3. By car: Drive via Malad West towards Marve and Madh. Parking near the beach fills up on weekends.

When to visit

November to February is the most comfortable time, with cooler and less humid weather. Avoid the monsoon (roughly June to September), when the sea is rough and the BMC warns against going near the shore at high tide. Weekday afternoons and early evenings are the quietest.

Places to visit near Aksa Beach

• Marve Beach: Just north of Aksa, with a jetty for ferries to Manori. Like Aksa, it is not safe for swimming.
• Madh Island and Madh Fort: Fishing villages, Erangal and Madh beaches, and the Portuguese-built Madh Fort (also called Versova Fort), which is owned by the Indian Air Force. A ferry links Madh to Versova Beach across the creek.
• Manori and Gorai: Quieter beaches across the creek, reached by ferry from Marve or by road via Borivali or Bhayandar.
