Quick answer: Accounting practice management software helps accounting and bookkeeping firms track client work, deadlines, staff time and billing. As of October 2026, dedicated options include Financial Cents, Jetpack Workflow, Aero Workflow, BrightManager (formerly Accountancy Manager), IRIS Practice Management, Capium, Thomson Reuters CS Professional Suite and Empire SUITE. Xero now adds practice management to its Partner Hub, and Intuit is replacing QuickBooks Online Accountant with Intuit Accountant Suite on 31 December 2026. Dext (formerly Receipt Bank) and AccountantsWorld’s Accounting Power support the bookkeeping side of a practice.

Practice Management Software for Accountants

Practice management software is the operating system of an accounting firm. It holds the client list, schedules recurring work such as monthly bookkeeping, payroll and tax returns, assigns tasks to staff, tracks deadlines and time, and turns that time into invoices. Many tools now add client portals, e-signatures and document requests, which cut down the email chasing that eats into a firm’s capacity.

We first published this list as “Best 15 Accounting Practice Management Software”. When we checked each product in October 2026, one website was up for sale, two products turned out to be corporate finance tools rather than practice management, several had been renamed, and QuickBooks Online Accountant was about to be retired. The list below has 12 tools that are still sold to accounting practices.

How to choose accounting practice management software

  • Your country. Several tools are built around one tax system: IRIS, Capium and BrightManager for the UK and Ireland, CS Professional Suite for US firms. Indian practices should check support for GST, TDS and income tax deadlines, or choose a configurable workflow tool.
  • Workflow first. Test how easily you can create recurring job templates, set due dates and see who is overloaded. This is where most of the time savings come from.
  • Client experience. A secure client portal, document requests and e-signatures reduce chasing and keep sensitive files out of email.
  • Time and billing. If you bill by the hour or by fixed fee, check that time tracking, work in progress (WIP) and invoicing are built in or integrate cleanly.
  • Integrations. Make sure the tool connects with the accounting software your clients use (Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and others) and your email and calendar.
  • Compliance. UK firms need anti-money laundering (AML) checks; all firms need audit trails and access controls. Ask where data is stored.

The 12 tools in detail

1. Dext (formerly Receipt Bank)

Receipt Bank was renamed Dext, and its old website now redirects there. Dext automates bookkeeping for small businesses and for accounting and bookkeeping firms: it captures receipts and invoices, extracts the data, stores documents, monitors client data health and publishes to the client’s accounting software, with AI-assisted bookkeeping and payments. It is not a full practice management system, but many firms use it alongside one to cut data entry, as the original article described. Dext offered a 14-day free trial in October 2026.

2. Xero Partner Hub with Practice Management

The original article described Xero’s small business accounting software, which is not practice management. For firms, Xero offers the Partner Hub to Xero partners, and its site now lists a new Practice Management add-on that brings jobs, time and billing into the same hub as client information and compliance. Xero also offers Workpapers and other tools for accountants and bookkeepers. It suits firms whose clients mostly use Xero.

3. Intuit Accountant Suite (replacing QuickBooks Online Accountant)

Intuit’s site says QuickBooks Online Accountant will be discontinued on 31 December 2026 as Intuit moves all firms to Intuit Accountant Suite, with no data migration or switching costs. The Core version of Intuit Accountant Suite has no monthly fee, like QuickBooks Online Accountant before it. Intuit lists working on several client files at once, managing support requests, accounting and tax in one tool, grouping clients by custom segments, permissions by office or service line, personal dashboards, automation of reconciliation and categorisation, and AI summaries of client issues.

4. BrightManager (formerly Accountancy Manager)

Accountancy Manager is now BrightManager from Bright, and its old address redirects there. It is cloud practice management for UK and Irish accounting practices, bookkeepers and payroll bureaus, with task management, client onboarding, a GDPR-compliant client portal that supports e-signatures and form submissions, automated emails and SMS, time tracking, profitability reports, templates, and anti-money laundering (AML) and risk checks, which matches the original article’s description. A free trial is offered.

5. Jetpack Workflow

Jetpack Workflow is workflow and project management software for accounting and bookkeeping firms. You build service templates with custom fields and tasks, set a recurring schedule, and assign the work to one or many clients, so the team knows what is due and who owns it. It also covers client management and capacity management, with a free trial. The original article’s figure of 16,000 customers is not on the current site.

6. IRIS Practice Management

IRIS Practice Management is desktop software for UK accountancy practices. It gives a CRM dashboard with an overview of jobs, tasks and clients, and lets you set up one-off or recurring tasks by client, job, work-in-progress status and priority. IRIS also sells cloud alternatives, such as IRIS Elements, and a time-and-fees platform called IRIS Firm Management.

7. Financial Cents

Financial Cents is an all-in-one practice management system covering workflows and to-do lists, workflow automation, team collaboration, email integration, capacity management, time tracking, document management, client requests, e-signatures, a client CRM, billing and payments, proposals and engagement letters, and month-end close. It also lists AI agents. As the original article said, its simplicity is its main appeal for smaller firms. A free trial is available.

8. CS Professional Suite (Thomson Reuters)

CS Professional Suite, from Thomson Reuters, is a family of products for US tax and accounting firms. It includes Practice CS for time and billing practice management, FirmFlow for cloud-based workflow, Accounting CS for write-up, trial balance, financial statements and payroll, Engagement Manager for audits, tax and document management, client portals and hosted options. It suits firms that want one vendor for most of their practice.

9. Aero Workflow

Aero Workflow is workflow software for client accounting services (CAS), bookkeeping and accounting firms. It focuses on checklists, scheduled tasks, workflow templates and practice management, built on the idea the original article described: capturing your firm’s know-how in procedures so recurring and one-off work is done the same way each time. A free trial and free onboarding are offered.

10. Accounting Power (AccountantsWorld)

Accounting Power is now sold by AccountantsWorld, and its old website redirects there. It is cloud accounting software built for accountants who keep books for clients, with a write-up system with bank feeds, a customisable trial balance, adjusting entries, customisable financial statements and multi-period reporting. AccountantsWorld also sells Practice Relief for practice management and Payroll Relief for payroll.

11. Capium

Capium is a UK cloud accountancy suite for practices. Its products cover practice management, accounts production, corporation tax, self assessment, bookkeeping, payroll, charity accounts, time and fees, company secretarial and Making Tax Digital (MTD) software, all integrated in one platform, which matches the “combined package” the original article described.

12. Empire SUITE

Empire SUITE is cloud software for running professional firms, with tools aimed at tax and client accounting work. Its modules include Empire RESOURCE for staff scheduling, automated tax scheduling, Empire TIME OFF, Empire TIME for time entry (including from Microsoft Outlook and Teams), Empire EXPENSE and Empire CAS. It suits larger firms that need to match the right staff to the right engagements.

Removed since our earlier version

  • ceTools: its website now redirects to a “domain for sale” page, so we could not confirm the product still exists.
  • BlackLine: still sold, but it is financial close, reconciliation and intercompany software for corporate finance teams, not practice management for accounting firms.
  • ApprovalMax: still sold, but it is approval and accounts payable software for Xero, QuickBooks Online and NetSuite users. See our accounts payable guide below. We have also removed the original article’s “$39 a month” price, which we could not verify.

Frequently asked questions

What does accounting practice management software do?

It organises a firm’s client list, recurring jobs, deadlines, staff tasks, time records and billing in one place, and often adds client portals, document requests and e-signatures.

Is QuickBooks Online Accountant being discontinued?

Yes. Intuit says QuickBooks Online Accountant will be discontinued on 31 December 2026 and firms are moving to Intuit Accountant Suite, whose Core version has no monthly fee.

Do small firms need practice management software?

A sole practitioner can manage with a calendar and checklist for a while. Once you have staff, dozens of recurring clients or many filing deadlines, dedicated software reduces missed deadlines and makes capacity visible.

What is the difference between practice management and accounting software?

Accounting software records a business’s transactions. Practice management software runs the accounting firm itself: who is doing which client’s work, by when, and how it is billed.

For your clients’ side of the work, see our guides to small business accounting software, bookkeeping software and accounts payable software.

Product details were checked in October 2026 against each vendor’s official website, including Intuit’s QuickBooks Online Accountant page. Products and plans for accountants change often, so confirm details with the vendor before you switch.
