Quick answer: Only a few Aadhaar links are compulsory today: linking Aadhaar with PAN (and quoting it in income tax returns), and Aadhaar authentication or seeding where you claim a government subsidy or benefit, such as ration, LPG subsidy or benefits paid by Direct Benefit Transfer. Linking Aadhaar with a bank account (unless you receive DBT), a mobile SIM, a voter ID card or a driving licence is optional. Each link has its own portal or process, summarised below with links to our detailed guides.

An earlier version of this article said the government had made linking Aadhaar with all documents mandatory, including bank accounts and SIM cards. That was the position in 2017. In September 2018 the Supreme Court struck down compulsory Aadhaar linking for bank accounts and mobile SIMs, and the 2019 amendment to the Aadhaar Act made Aadhaar a voluntary option for bank and telecom KYC.

PAN: mandatory

Under Section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018, you must quote Aadhaar when you apply for PAN or file an income tax return, and link your existing PAN with Aadhaar. The general deadline was 30 June 2023. A PAN that was not linked by then became inoperative; to make it operative again, you pay a ₹1,000 fee through the e-Pay Tax service on the e-filing portal and then submit the link request. The PAN becomes operative again within 30 days of linking.

Some people are exempt, including residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, NRIs, people aged 80 or over, and non-citizens. To learn more about PAN itself, read what a PAN card is and who needs one.

  1. Go to the Income Tax e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in) and choose “Link Aadhaar” under quick links.
  2. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.
  3. If the deadline has passed, pay the ₹1,000 fee through e-Pay Tax first, as the portal prompts.
  4. Validate with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile.
  5. Use “Link Aadhaar Status” on the same portal to confirm.

Bank account: optional, but needed for DBT

You do not need Aadhaar to open or keep a bank account. If you receive a subsidy, scholarship or other benefit by Direct Benefit Transfer, though, the account usually has to be Aadhaar-seeded so that payments can be routed by your Aadhaar number. You can seed your Aadhaar at your branch, through net banking or through the bank’s app. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) runs a portal called Bharat Aadhaar Seeding Enabler (BASE), where you can check which bank account is mapped for DBT.

EPF account (UAN)

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) uses Aadhaar to verify members. According to an EPFO circular reported in 2025, new UANs have been generated through Aadhaar face authentication in the UMANG app since 1 August 2025, with exceptions such as international workers. Our step-by-step guide covers linking Aadhaar with your EPF account.

Ration card

Aadhaar seeding of ration cards is used to stop duplicate and fake cards and to enable One Nation One Ration Card portability. The Department of Food and Public Distribution’s 2025 year-end review reported that more than 99.9% of ration cards had at least one member’s Aadhaar seeded. Seeding is done through your state’s food and civil supplies department or at your fair price shop; the original article said it could be done on UIDAI’s website, but UIDAI does not handle ration cards.

LPG connection

LPG subsidy is paid into your bank account under the PAHAL scheme. From 1 October 2026, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, domestic consumers must have completed biometric Aadhaar authentication to book refills at the subsidised price. You can do it when your cylinder is delivered, at the distributor’s showroom, or in the oil company’s app. Consumers who do not want to authenticate can still buy LPG without subsidy. See our guide to linking Aadhaar with a Bharat Gas connection.

Pension and life certificate

The original article said pensions would be transferred to the “account linked with Aadhaar” through Jeevan Pramaan. More precisely, Jeevan Pramaan is a digital life certificate that pensioners can submit using Aadhaar authentication, including face authentication on a phone, instead of visiting the bank. Read our Jeevan Pramaan guide for the current steps.

Mobile SIM: optional

The original article said SIM-Aadhaar linking was mandatory. That has not been true since 2018. Under the Telecommunications (User Identification) Rules, 2026, operators identify customers through Aadhaar e-KYC or a separate digital KYC route for those who do not use Aadhaar. Our guide to SIM KYC with your mobile operator has the details.

Voter ID: optional

Since the Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021, voters can choose to share their Aadhaar number with the Election Commission using Form 6B, on the Voters’ Service Portal or the Voter Helpline app. In September 2023 the Election Commission told the Supreme Court that giving Aadhaar under these rules is not mandatory. The original article mentioned linking by SMS or phone call; use the official portal or app today.

Train tickets

The original article said Aadhaar linking would give women and senior citizens discounts and faster refunds. We could not find a current rule offering such discounts for Aadhaar linking, so we have removed that claim. What does apply now, according to the Ministry of Railways: from 1 July 2025, Tatkal tickets on the IRCTC website and app can be booked only by Aadhaar-authenticated users, and from 1 October 2025 the same applies to online general reserved tickets during the first 15 minutes after booking opens. Counter bookings follow separate rules, and these timings have been revised since, so check IRCTC before you book.

Frequently asked questions

PAN-Aadhaar linking for most taxpayers, and Aadhaar for government subsidies and benefits you choose to claim (such as subsidised ration and LPG). Most other links are optional.

Linking does not let one organisation see your data held by another. To limit risk, share a masked Aadhaar where possible, lock your biometrics when not in use and check your Aadhaar authentication history on myAadhaar regularly.

How do I check which bank account receives my DBT payments?

Use NPCI’s BASE portal or ask your bank. If the wrong account is mapped, your bank can change the seeding with your consent.

Linking can fail if names or dates of birth do not match. Correct the mismatched record first: name and date of birth on Aadhaar are changed at an Aadhaar centre, and PAN details through Protean or UTIITSL.

This guide was checked in October 2026 against the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal rules, the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Act, 2019, and releases from the Ministry of Railways, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Department of Food and Public Distribution published through the Press Information Bureau. Linking rules change often, so check the official portal before you pay any fee or rely on a deadline.
